I just always wondered- I thought a DWI was "Driving While Intoxicated" and DUI was "Driving Under the Influence"

DWI - Driving While Intoxicated, usually alcohol, may be other.
DUI - Driving Under the Influence, more to target drugs, may be alcohol.
OUIL - Operating Under the Influence of Liquor - self explanatory.
If you look carefully, you will most likely find that each has a different penalty. Even though they are essentially the same. |

DWI is 'Driving While Intoxicated" DUI is Driving under Influence which can include drugs, a more general term. Same idea ,bigger noose. |

I heard the term DWI used in England not so long ago but I don't know if it's an official term. In this case it referred to Driving Whilst Incapacitated. |

The terms are the same, it's just certain areas people may use one terminology over the other. |

In the U.S., the original term was DWI, which stood for driving while intoxicated. However, this name was problematic, both because a person who had too much alcohol to drive safely and legally was not always behave drunk enough to be considered intoxicated, as the term is used in other contexts, and because some narcotics were even more dangerous than alcohol. Therefore, the term driving under the influence (DUI) was created for the crime of driving while on drugs OR with an alcohol level greater than allowed by law for drivers, whether or not "intoxicated" in the conventional sense of the word. |

No difference. DUI is driving under the influence, and DWI is driving while intoxicated. They are two different terms with the same meaning. They basically mean that you are driving while under the influence of chemicals that alters your ability to make good judgments. They both mean the same thing, but are different terms. They are drug related. They also have consequences which involve being fined or being jailed. |

There is no difference at all...DWI driving while intoxicated, DUI driving under the influence and they also have one that is called OWI..operating a vehicle while intoxicated, all of them are the same and treated the same. |
