Today while I was driving my dad was in the car.
We came upon a four way intersection on a two lane road. I need to turn right on a divided highway but be in the left lane. Since there were no cars coming instead of turning into the closest lane (the right lane) and then driving for a bit and then switch lanes, I decided to turn and go right into the left lane. My dad screamed at me and was like "ILLEGAL ILLEGAL ILLEGAL" but He does it a lot and others do it a lot. I have searched for the answer on google but I cannot find the answer.
That is the first I ever have done a turn like that.
I am posting this to see if I am right or wrong?

I personally thought that is was just preferred rather than the law.

There is nothing illegal about that at all. It amazes me how many people think you have to drive for a certain number of feet in a specific lane before moving over. By that time, there's traffic and you usually can't move over!
It is often necessary to make an immediate left turn or U-turn after turning right. In fact, signs tell you to in many instances. Example: An intersection where no left turns are permitted. You're required to turn right, and then make an immediate U-turn in the median. You MUST get into the left lane as soon as possible, and that means turning directly into it. If that was an illegal move, there would be no signs specifically instructing you to do it.
By turning immediately into that lane, there is no other traffic to worry about. Going a certain distance and then trying to shoot across several lanes is dangerous and highly illegal.
There is one "however" here, though. If two or more lanes are designated for right turns, then you must be in the leftmost lane to do this. If you're in the right turning lane, you have to stay to the right. But if only one lane is marked for turns, you can turn into any lane you choose. |
