Just how do window/glass breakers work?

I'm writing something where it describes a character using a window/glass breaker on a key chain to break a car window-- does it literally shatter the window, or just make a hole so you can shatter the window, or what? Looking at pictures of the device, I can't get a good grasp on what it does, exactly. Thanks!

The most common tool is also known as an automatic center punch.
It's a spring loaded device with a steel point.
When pressed on a surface, the spring is compressed.
When pressed a little further, the spring pressure is released against the steel point, driving it forward forcibly.
The steel point shatters the window. |

There are a couple that I've heard of. One is a device that has a suction cup to anchor it to the glass while a metal blade swivels on the anchor, scoring a circle in the glass with the suction cup in the center. Then the circular area can be pushed in or pulled out with the suction cup rather quietly so you can reach your hand into the window to unlock a door, etc. This does not shatter the glass.
Other than that, I have heard that you can use a small chunk of porcelain and throw it at a window and the window will shatter. People have gotten their porcelain from old broken sinks, toilets, and spark plugs. |
