Left turn signal sign?
Find answers to your legal question.

Left turn signal sign?

If i am on a 3 lane one way street, and in the far left lane, can i turn left on red. There is a sign that reads Left Turn Signal, so i assume that that means you may turn on red after coming to a stop and using your turn signal?

If you have to cross a moving lane of traffic, you can not turn on red anywhere. If the road you are entering is also one way moving from right to left, then you may turn left on red under the same restrictions as a right on red in most states, however, best plan is just pick up a drivers guide from the local DMV and look it up.

...why don't you call the Local Police Dept. and ask them ? (then you'd have the "correct" answer)

Left turn signal is an alert to a traffic light for left turns.
Left turn on red is only legal from a one way street to a one way street without crossing traffic.

No...."Left turn signal" means that left turns are controled by a dedicated traffic light. What this means is even if the main lights for your road are green and there are no other cars you can NOT turn left until that SPECIFIC light turns green.

"Another distinction is between intersections that have dedicated signals for turning across the flow of opposing traffic and those that do not. Such signals are called dedicated left-turn lights in the United States and Canada (since opposing traffic is on the left). With dedicated left turn signals, a left-pointing arrow turns green when traffic may turn left without conflict, and turns red or disappears otherwise."

"Left-turn Signal Sign:
"When a motorist wanting to turn left approaches a signalized intersection using left-turn protected only mode, he/she may be confused with the combination of two or more signals displaying a green ball for the through movement and a left-turn signal displaying a red ball or red arrow. To compensate for this, a sign that clearly identifies the left-turn signal is to be used. The LEFT TURN SIGNAL sign provides additional information not given in the actual signal indication to the driver by specifying the control device for different intersection movements. This is illustrated in Figure 3-22. Such information may eliminate driver confusion when approaching an intersection and prevent red-light running for left-turning traffic."

"Left Turns At Traffic Lights - Permissive And Protected Modes
When making a left turn at an intersection controlled by traffic lights, there is always some doubt as to whether traffic in the opposite direction is stopped by a red light or not. Unless you see traffic obviously waiting at a stop line, assume that it may not be stopped. The official standard for the USA is:
If the left turn signal is a green circle, or if there is no separate left turn signal, then traffic in the opposite direction is not stopped. This is known as permissive mode in US highway traffic engineering terminology since vehicles turning left have to wait until a break in the flow of traffic in the opposite direction permits them to turn.

If the left turn signal is a green arrow then traffic in the opposite direction is stopped by red lights. This is known as protected mode in US highway traffic engineering terminology, since turning vehicles are protected from traffic in the opposing direction by red lights. In this mode pedestrians are also presented with "Don't Walk" signs across the relevant crosswalks while traffic is turning left.
Some traffic lights operate exclusively in permissive mode and therefore never show a green arrow to traffic turning left. Other traffic lights operate exclusively in protected mode and therefore never show a green circle to traffic turning left. Yet other traffic lights have a protected mode phase followed by a permissive mode phase during each cycle; they show a green arrow to traffic turning left during the protected phase, followed by a yellow arrow to indicate that the protected phase is about to end, followed by a green circle to indicate the protected phase. Yet again, some traffic lights vary between these three possibilities depending on the time of day."
