Mobile phones and smoking in cars?
|
If talking on your phone is illegal in cars while driving,
Why isn't smoking? They both require roughly the same movements and similar times with one hand on the wheel only so therefore theoretically pose the same risks as each other.
Why is it not illegal to smoke and drive with one hand and it is illegal to talk and drive with one hand? Additional Details You cannot light a smoke without taking at least one hand off the wheel of your car. Therefore this makes smoking as dangerous as talking on the phone in a physical sense. Why is one legal and the other not?

To be fair, driving when distracted is illegal, so doing anything that isn't driving when you're driving is illegal.
However, smoking is less brain-intensive than talking on a phone. You'd be surprised how caught up in conversation your brain gets when you're talking, and by then you're completely not paying attention to the road. Smoking on the other hand is breathing in and out, just with something new in your mouth, no need for complicated brain techniques as a conversation does. |

Well I live in northern Michigan and it is not illegal to drive while on a cell phone
Nor is it illegal to smoke and drive.
As far as driving with one hand what about all the people that drive a stick shift car? They have to remove 1 hand to shift, most dont put that hand back until they are in either 4th or 5th gear.
And what about radio/mp3 players, maybe those should be banned as well!
As far as that goes, maybe people should stop to roll down thier windows, or yawning, coughing!
I remember when the USA was the home of the free, what is happening to that, our freedom is being taken away slowly !!! |

Because with your phone your looking down at the phone pressing buttons and stuff. With cig you just put in your mouth and then put the ashes out the window. |

For one thing, habitual smokers (I am one) can light a cigarette without taking their eyes off the road for even a split second. There is no distraction arguing with a smoke. Many of the problems are not from TALKING on a phone, but from text messaging.
Here's a cut & paste of my answer to a similar question yesterday:
Because smokers don't kill people on the roads, and cell phone users do.
"He died in a head-on collision with another vehicle. The other operator was smoking a cigarette." How many times have you seen something like that on the news? |

How about texting, it is not so much talking it is more to do with dialling looking at the buttons, people don't look at a cigarette when smoking do they. No I don't smoke. Yes there are so many laws we will always break one some time but a car is to big to bang into things for what ever reason. |

Where I live both smoking and talking on Cellphones is illegal while driving, but the only one that is enforced is the cellphone one and then they try to get you on another thing too so that they can give you a higher fine and besides they have to do paperwork on tickets so they want it to be worth the trouble. I think it very disgusting to be behind a driver who flicks ashes out of the window. I got struck in the face once with ashes because I had my window open . People also do lots of other disgusting habits...play radio really loud, fart, spit, throw trash out window, give nasty hand signals...so if someone says this is the land of the free and we are taking it away from them...have you ever been hit with spit by a passing car? So as far as I am concerned...the Police are very lenient and the laws are not strict enough in some cases...you know you can drink pop while driving and not get a ticket??? |

It should be illegal... but i think that its because cell phones can be turned off and left alone but smokers have a very huge craving and they wont stop doing it just to drive. |
