The time to be worried about motorway driving is when there is "normal traffic" if you have never driven on one before. The time you are proposing is usually the start of the commute to London, but 0600 on Boxing Day there should be very little traffic as most people will still be in bed! There is a 70 mph speed limit on all motorways, unless local limits are applied. The only "confusing" junction is at jn 4, where you need lane 2 (centre) as lane 1 goes off for High Wycombe & Marlow. On the approach to the M25, stay in lane 1 and follow road markings to the right M25 / M4 & NOT to the left as you will head for Dartford - eventually! Then follow both overhead signs & road markings to your destination bearing in mind the number of lanes increases to 6 as you approach Heathrow so stay alert. & drive safely

As a regular user of both the M40, M25,M3 and M4 and a regular visitor to T5 I can only say take it in your own time; there is likely to be moderate to light traffic about and remember to use the services; they are there to give you a break. If you get in the wrong lanr don't panic, stick with your decision and correct your journey at the next intersection. don't cut accross markers or hatchings and follow lane directions
T5 is just after the M4-M25 intersection and is nice and easy, the car parks are great and spacious. fee's are £4.00 per hour though with the vat change it is a little less than that now. Turn around times for passengers is about 40 mins from landing so if you want to save yourself parking time your arrival to allow for that. Inside T5 the facilities are really set up for collecting so enjoy a coffee. Costa on the arrivals floor and Nero's on departures floor, but both are easy to get to from the car park.
When heading back to M25 on leaving terminal 5 ensure to be in the right hand filter lane this will ensure you are on the north bound M25 heading towards your home route.
relax enjoy and have a good day

Boxing Day is usually a very bad day for driving. I've encountered more idiots per mile of motorway on Boxing Days than any other day except Summer Bank Holidays. Half of them are still drunk from Christmas Day.

Please punctuate properly folks.

Why are you petrified? Are you scared of the speeds involved on the motorways, of getting lost, of crashing into something? If you are scared of motorways, please don't drive on them, until you have approached a driving school and had some motorway lessons. It isn't fair on the rest of us. We need all of us to have a good safe standard of driving.

you will be fine, take it easy, tune into radio5

M40 is a good road, and it is not far along the M25 to t5

At that time of the morning you've got nothing to worry about and really and truly the only thing about motorway driving is boredom.

Why petrified? The road will be pretty quite by usual standards and probably easier to drive on than an A road.

Google highway agency's website to check for delays.

Use goolge maps to give you door to door travel directions and pay attention to what google says about how long the journey is going to be and allow for delayes.

If you have sat-nav do set it up at home first unless you have read the manual and know how to search by location name.

If it's your first couple of times on the motorway then drive slowly as some road signs can be confusing.

Calm down. Regardless of what people say, motorway driving is easy. Just keep your wits about you and check mirrors regularly and keep to speed limits. The only hard bit (if it can be termed as hard) is joining the motorway when the road is busy.
