My car is due for it's MOT in the next few weeks! Is my spare tyre part of the check?
Find answers to your legal question.

My car is due for it's MOT in the next few weeks! Is my spare tyre part of the check?

In addition to the above I have done some research and understand that my spare tyre is NOT part of the MOT check! Can somebody please confirm that this is not the case BUT that some years ago the spare tyre USED to be part of the MOT check and if it had little tread the car would fail it's MOT? TA!!!

It is not a requirement to carry a spare tyre but if you do then it must be legal.

The spare wheel is NOT a part of the MOT test.
Only if fitted is it part of the test,if it is in the spare wheel carrier then it is not.

Bardic
Those who state that a spare tyre is NOT part of the MoT are correct. It is only the tyres on the road that are included.

There is a note to the test regs that say that if the tester notices the spare is faulty he may bring it to the keeper's attention, that's all.

No the spare wheel is not part of the MOT, many new cars don't even carry a spare so it would be a great problem for them if the spare was part of the MOT.

The spare tyre is not part of the mot test as legally a car doesn't require a spare wheel, a lot of cars now do not have them as they take up too much space so they get a can of foam instead. However if it is fitted underneath the vehicle it must be secured properly.
In the case of the Road Traffic Act however if it is fitted to the vehicle then it must be up to legal standards.
You could always remove it from the vehicle if you are concerned with it, better still replace it as you never know when you will need it!

My car has no spare wheel and it passed its mot the other week.

The MOT does NOT require you to HAVE a spare tyre. BUT - if it is in the car at the time of the test it may be flagged as an 'advisory' which is not a fail.

a spare wheel is not part of the test.

Why do people answer these questions when they clearly don't know the answer??
A spare wheel that is not fitted to the vehicle is not and has never been part of an MOT test. Only tyre's that are actually in use are tested. As another person has said lots of modern cars do not even come with a spare so how on earth are they meant to pass?
To Sheila H - sorry to break it to you but if a garage failed your car because the spare in the boot had something wrong with it then they failed it incorrectly.

if the spare is in the car, then it has to pass the same tests as the other tyres (tread, cracks, bulges etc)

if the tyre is not in the car, then it is not a problem. can't fail for not having one.

i would suggest getting a new but cheapish brand tyre for the spare.
not worth risking lives for the sake of a few quid, and getting hurt because you changed to a dodgy spare.

It is part of the MOT if it is present. Take it out before the test if it's dodgy

If the spare is in the car it's part of the MOT. If it isn't in the car then it won't be examined. Not having a spare is not a problem for the MOT.
If your spare is dodgy take it out for the MOT, but remember it might be the most important tyre some day.

I live in Iowa so we don't have to get our cars checked. What the hell is a MOT check.

sir your spare tyre is part of thte mot test if it is in the car when you have it tested if you take it out they cannot test it and your car will not be failed for it not being legal

Yes the spare tyre is part of the MOT. When I last took my car for its MOT I made sure all the tyres were okay and right pressure etc, only I forgot about the spare tyre. The spare had a puncture and I did not know, so I failed the MOT. I got a new spare tyre and took it back to the garage and then my car passed. So sorry mate get your spare checked out otherwise you are in bother.
