My car will not stop sliding in the snow? what do i do?

Hi i have a honda civic coupe 2007 model. i go very slowly, only about 10 miles an hour which drives everyone else on the road crazy. Imean i only go this slow when the roads are snowy/icy of course!
The car has 2 new tires on it, the other ones are very old and the treads are pretty much gone, but my parents wont get new tires for it. its their car.

i try to go very slow on turns. The car keeps sliding/skidding around, what else can i do?

also, when i do skid what do i do? break? accelerate? steer?

thank you. i know it sounds like im really dumb. ive only had my liscense for a year, so....

If you can't afford new tires but also can't afford not to drive.

You can put some weight in your trunk. Some cinder blocks, or bags of cat litter, or rock salt (with rock salt you can use it to help you get "unstuck" if you need to).

When you are sliding you are supposed to turn your wheel in the direction that you are sliding.

Some cars are just not good in the snow even with good tires. Don't listen to the guy under me who said speed up. That wont help, he doesn't even know the difference between "your" and "you're."

Another thing you can do is try to use the brake as little as possible until you get the new tires. Instead of braking just stop accelerating from further away and coast to a stop (that's easier if you have a manual transmission- but I've done it in an automatic)

Firecracker .
Stop driving it.

Bald tires will always slide on snow and ice.
It needs decent tires. They do not need to be new, but they need to be in good shape.

If it can't be controlled at 10 mph, it's not safe at any speed.

Firstly, have your suspension checked and wheel alignment done. A car that is out of alignment will tend to fight you for control. Secondly, install a set of better-gripping tires. Michelin Green-X's or Bridgestone Turanza's offer about the best overall traction. Use the Tire Rack performance checker for tire evaluations. Also, use their tire cost evaluator to help determine what prices are involved. There are also a few good choices for "ice" tires, which improve bad weather driving by light years. Remind your parents that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. In other words, protecting your life (and theirs) and preventing unnecessary accident claims justifies nearly ANY cost spent!!! Good Luck!!

The answer is don't drive. If the tires are that bald, the car is unsafe to drive in ANY weather condition.

Somehow it doesn't make sense that your parents won't "let" you put new tires on it. Have you offered to pay for the tires? If so, they shouldn't have any objection. They either don't care if you live or die, or there is something fishy, or missing about this story.

You need winter tires!

My guess is that you have some bald tires. Even if they are notbald they are probably not rated forsnow. Easy fix, get snow tires. They are a lot cheaper than a deductable.

What everyone else said and- Make sure you pump your breaks instead of locking them when in a slide.

freudian.fate
Its the tires.

$ so confused$
maybe you need to replace that tire or if that car doesn't have a 4 wheel drive buy some chains.
good luck

make sure the new tires are in the front.

you can decrease the tire pressure a little to get more traction, but not much else
