My dodge ram 1500 caught on fire while driving down the highway!?

my ram 1500 caught fire driving down the highway. Insurance company says a small exhaust leak heated up the undercarriage, causing the protective coating to melt, leaking onto the tank and catching fire. the entire tank is melted, all hoses leading to the gas tank and the shocks were comprimised, the bedliner melted to the truck. does anyone think this is normal? there was not a thing wrong with this truck previous to this fire. all normal recalls were done and there was no check engine issue nor was there a noticeable notion that there was a exhaust leak. dodge won't even talk to me about it. if you have an exhaust leak, you could ignite your truck? does that make any sense? I was lucky, i was traveling on the highway in a torrential downpour and the truck just died. the fuel line had been burnt away and no longer fed the engine. according to the insurance adjuster, the mechanic who replaced the tank and a local dodge dealer in PA said I was the luckiest person on the planet that I didn't go up in flames. I know it is difficult to explode a vehicle, but this was much closer than i ever want to come. i need some help with talking to dodge about it because they won't even consider talking to me about it because my insurance company repaired the truck. they told me to contact dodge after the repairs were made, so that is what i did. big mistake. i had tried to get someone from dodge right after it happened, but they didn't get back to me and i have no other vehicle to drive. this scenario scares me. anyone else ever have anything like this happen?

I have tried to contact Dodge, they will have no conversations with me about it as the repairs had to be made. I was in a different state than where Ilive and had to get home. This truck has been impeccably taken care of, it only has 52k miles on it. It's always clean and properly maintained. I am afraid to drive it now. Who knows what else will catch on fire. Dodge should at least listen to me and review the situation not just blow me off and hang up on me. The senior staff folks you talk to don't have supervisors, the supervisors are just there for clerical reasons, I am told by dodge. I was angry that I was blown off. Companies need to listen to their customers. I will never buy a dodge/chrysler product again. can't wait to sell this one.

What year is the truck? If the truck is an older model Dodge is in no way at fault. Exhausts rust and leak, its the nature of the beast. Now if this truck is brand new then you might have a legitimate complaint. You also never know if something from the road caused the damage on something on the undercarriage. I had that happen to a company car I was driving and the transmission line leaked and the transmission dropped. So was that chevy's fault? No, it was just that, an accident. |

Completely possible.
I bought a salvage vehicle that something very similar to that happened.
In my case, the brakes got too hot, and ignited the tires. Which ignited the wheel well, and half the engine. Then the battery exploded, and it went downhill from there.
It falls under one of those "improbable, but possible" situations. You can't really hold Dodge responsible, because it was a series of events, and is isolated to your vehicle. But it wasn't your fault either.
Call it an act of God, and be thankful you weren't hurt :) |
