My neighbour is a convicted drink driver, yet persists in driving drunk. What can i do?

For years I suspected, in fact knew that my neighbour drove drunk. I mentioned it to other neighbours, but they didn't seem to care. I mentioned it to the Police, but they said there was nothing they could do as they needed to catch him in the act.

Then one day I remember him coming home in a Police car and after that he didn't drive the car for about 18 months, so I assumed correctly that he had finally been caught.

In the last few days he has started driving again, and tonight to my complete horror I watched out of the window as he proceeded to reverse his car into mine which was parked out in the street. I went outside to tell him what he had done, as he was oblivious, but he just said send me the bill. As he wound down his car window I could tell he was totally drunk. I told him that I couldn't believe that having been banned for drunk driving he was driving drunk again, but he just muttered something about his ban being over! He was that drunk.

My question is what can I now do? Last time the Police didn't seem to care, they even said to me "Sir, we don't set traps", (what's a speed camera I said). I also don't want him to know that it's me who has told the Police, but why should I wait until he kills someone. Do the Police have a duty to act, follow him etc, if I tell them what I know?

I look forward to any suggestions.

just report him and stay out of his way

The police can't follow him around. With the best will in the world they can't tail every criminal on the off-chance of catching them red-handed.

What you should have done at the time of the crash was to phone the police immediately. They certainly would have attended and breathalysed him. This would have resulted in a further ban and a heavy fine.

Unfortunately, anonymity cannot be guaranteed for normal calls; but if you see him drive off intoxicated then you could call the Crimestoppers and report him anonymously. Tell them you have seen the car being driven erratically and dangerously and you strongly suspect that the driver is under the influence of drink and/or drugs.

If you tell them he is a convicted drunk driver and he is driving again under the influence of drink they will put a patrol car on him and watch his movements give them times he coming home at or better still in the pub at good look with that
