Need driving help! who has the right of way on a 4 way stop?

okay, so I need someone to clarify how the right of way works at at 4 way stop. Isn't it whoever comes first, goes first? what does that mean? Like whoever comes to the STOP sign first? or whoever is in line first?

say there is a line of cars in the lane you are in. After a car in front of you turns, you keep pulling up until you eventually get to the stop sign. As you are pulling up to the stop sign, a car comes speeding down the road to the left of you and manages to stop at the actual stop sign before you. SO who goes first? Do I go first because I have been waiting to turn, or does she go only because she technicaly arrived at the stop sign before me my seconds. Like i don't know how that "whoever comes first, goes first" thing. because to me, I had been there first. since i have been waiting for a while right? but she seemed like she like sped to the stop sign so she could arrive at the sign before me and go before me.

sorry if this doesnt make sense hope someone can help

Whoever gets stopped at the front of the line, at the sign first goes first. First to stop is first to go. If that's not clear enough, then work it out with the other drivers. Waiting, in your example, means nothing. The "other car" is ahead of you because he got to his stop sign and stopped before you.

Just to clarify - you are wrong.

It's literally impossible to stop at a 4-way stop and then crash into somebody subsequent to that. So there's always room to negotiate.

IT'S WHO EVER GETS THERE FIRST GOES FIRST. IF YOU ARRIVE AT THE SAME EXACT TIME, THE PERSON ON THE RIGHT GOES FIRST

from what i learned- say you and another car come up to the All Way stop at the same time. The person to the right goes first. So if I pull up and another car pulls up- whichever of us is to the other persons right would go first. But good luck with this. We live in a world of first come first serve and some people don't obey traffic rules anyway. They just assume it's their turn whether they were there first or last.

whoever gets to the sign first goes.. if its at the same time then the person to the right goes.. these laws change too often for me to keep up, also depends what state your in... driving laws are by state. this is for MA.. hope this helped you

The person who arrives at the stop sign first. If two cars arrive at the exact same time, the car to the right goes first. example, if a car is at 6oclock, and 9oclock, 6oclock goes first, because there is no one to the right of them. If they are opposed, 12, and 6, its a toss up. whoever got there first.

joesocliff
she has the right to go first.
you said it yourself : she got first to the stop sign by seconds.
thats the way it should be.

if all the cars arrive at the same time, the car that arrives first has the right of way.
if they all arrive at different times, the car on the right has the right of way.
when i say arrive i mean the first car to get to the stop sign.
in ur case i think u should have the right of way since you were technically first.
hope it helps!

If you arrive a the stop sign first, you have the right of way, but if you arrive close to the same time, the person on the right has the right of way.

Yes, it's whoever gets to the stop sign first (even if you have been waiting in a long line). If 2 people arrive at a 4-way intersection at the same time, the yield goes to the person on your right (counterclockwise)

The car that comes to a COMPLETE STOP at the stop bar first.

who stops first goes first.

What a clusterF when somebody just sits there waving somebody else ahead. Just go already. Is my opinion anyway.

What I like to do sometimes, is stop early, so I can go ahead. That moves things along, so people don't have to wait as long. I'm thoughtful that way -- always thinking of others.

In reality the person who arrives at the stop sign first has the right of way regardless of if you been longer in line, but there are some people who are animals out there and are always in a rush to no where in a hurry all the time. Best thing to do if you are not certain is to let the person go first so that way you dont get into an accident. If I think the person is going to do something stupid, I wave my hand for them to go. Hope this helps

the person on the right of you should have the right of way, for instance if you at a stop sign and you guys get there at the same time and they are on your right, they have the right to go first. But if you are on the right then you should go first. Now like your asking, if they get there before you (even if they are speeding up to get there first) just wave them on. No biggie. Just don't be to quick to proceed after the stop

sorry...she's right. the car to actually stop at the sign first is the one to go first...if you both stop at the same tine the car on the right goes first

driver on the right side has the right of way, in the order of who arrived there in the first place

The most common right-of-way situation that occurs involves 4-way stops. When two vehicles approach a 4-way stop at about the same time, the driver of the vehicle on the left should yield the right-of-way to the vehicle on the right.

Another common right-of-way situation involves a lane ending or an object blocking your lane. When this occurs, the driver of the vehicle using the ending or blocked lane should yield the right-of-way to oncoming vehicles or following vehicles in the adjacent lane.

Whoever is more courteous. You either let her go, or she will wave you on and let you go.

i'm pretty sure it's the person who gets there first, most likely no car will come speedin out of no where and get there before but if they do i suppose they would go first. kind of like first come first served. but don't take my word for cause i'm only 13.

In a perfect world, the laws and guidelines say nothing about who got there first. It is the person on the right who goes first... Hence the term Right of way. If someone is turning across traffic and another is going straight... the person going straight has right of way.

But in our world, I allow the aggressive drivers to go first, because I like my insurance premiums just the way they are and don't want to get into an accident.

you should have gone first out of curtesy but technically she was being a &*%$. It happens all the time. sometimes people are nice and do it properly but she won't be the last. The first person to the stop sign goes first and you go in opposites.
