Neighborhood traffic cop self adopted?

New neighborhood with a homeowners association. Guy across the street has decide he is inforcing a self imposed 15 mph speed limit in our neighborhood..Early on he would come to my door and complain about my two at the time teenage girls. I told them to slow down and that the speed limit is 25. They did so..I have seen him approach allot of neighbors telling them to slow down. Yesterday I was coming home late with a good friend after a round of golf. To premise this, we both work for a school district and are around children all the time. As we are coming down the street, he spots us from the sidewalk and gives us this hard stare that continues until we pull up in front of my house.. As we get out of the car, my friend notices he is watching us and say "Hi, how are you doing"..Our neighbors reply is, "I don't know if Mike told you or not but the speed limit here is 15mph. I just blew him off and appologized to my friend.. This guy is a menace,. Speed limit residential is 25mph?

Residential speed limits vary as they are based on a variety of factors, but 25 mph is quite common. Your neighbor cannot self impose a speed limit. Please contact your city/town's local DOT or municipality in charge of transportation and ask to speak with someone about having a speed limit posted on your street. Someone will be able to help you out. This is a somewhat common request. I do not suggest revealing the situation with your neighbor to whom ever you speak with about the sign. I would simply tell them that there is some confusion amongst the neighborhood residents as to what the speed limit is on the road. Good luck.

Devils advocate time,,lets look at it from his perspective for a moment,,are there a lot of younger/older residents?

Maybe he had an experiance that left someone injured/dead and he hopes to avoid a future episode,or is it posible that being a new nieghborhood,,he simply would like to avoid the inconvieniance of needing to step out of the way quickly(25 miles per hour sounds slow,,until you have to jump out of the way..).

One last point,,,from beginning to end,,starting from the point you enter this nieghborhood until you end up at your house,,how many seconds/minutes do you lose by driving 15 mph vs 25 mph?think about that for a few moments....

contact dot in your area and have them post the speed limit signs on your street preferably on your neighbors right of way at the street

if it is not posted at 15 then the speed limit is 25, you can actualy call the police and report him as annoying or harassing he will get a ticket and you will have to show up in court. but by calling the cops you might put the fear of god into him and might make him quit. it might take more then once to get him to stop but it is worth it. we called the cops for over 6 months, it was for music, but the officers got so tired of showing up they ended up arresting them, good luck

Petition your local municipality to post 25 mph signs on your street.

Ignore him, if he continues to harrass you point out that the limit is 25 not 15, and that he can petition to have it changed, but in the meantime you are obeying the law.

what a nuisance. I feel for you. The home owner associations can get ridiculous. We had one that said we had to have our garbage cans in by ten in the morning....try that if leave the house 6 am to 5 pm.
It is a form of actual harrassment to have that guy following you around. Ours would throw those crappy stickers all over your car if you left it out when we had company. Good luck but unless its posted in a residential area it is 25 mph. But your association papers you signed and agreed to should cover what you agreed to.

Write up a petition to get speed limit signs put up in your neighborhood that state that it's 25 and have as many neighbors as possible sign it. Be specific and general at the same time in your explanation of why you want the signs up, but not condemning to your neighbor. Just simply state that the neighborhood fells like they need the signs up because there has been numerous disputes over the correct limit and you all would like it straightened out so there are no more confrontations. But do not name anyone who has been in If it is granted, he can no longer say anything about it once it is clearly posted in front of him. If he does confront you or your family and friends once the signs are posted, you can file a police complaint of harassment on him. That will shut him up! Ultimately, if he doesn't like it, he can move.

set your alarm clock for 2:30am. pull your car in front of his house and do a john force style burnout. when he comes out yelling, just tell him the car WAS doing 15 mph and to stop bothering you or this will continue
