No!! I am asking why and who 70mph.?

I did not say anything about wanting to go faster. Read the question. Who decided that 70mph was the wright speed and why. What are the facts please. I live in the U.K.. Not the U.S.

i've no idea who any why implemented the speed limit, but i feel with modern cars, abs breaks, air bags, far superior stopping ability and handling the speed limit should be increased to 90mph.

the drawback with this is that cars have improved, safety and in some places road conditions have improved. the only drawback is, driver abillity has not. people with powerful cars, or even safe but fast cars forget there ability behind the wheel. Moreso, there are far to many cars that are not modern. poor handling breaks etc.

if speed was to increase - to say 90 where would that leave us. In honesty most people currently do 90 on long trips, motorways etc. what would these people do then. would they be able to cope if they sped at 100+.

anyway im blathering on -

because its the next one up from 60?

i think it needs to be 80, people have better cars now than when they made the 70mph limit.

It was set by the Ministry of Transport when the top speed of many cars was about 70mph. However, while the speed of cars have increased the standard driving ability of the average motorist has not. Therefore, 70mph is more than fast enough.

When the engineers have come to conclusion that the speed limit should be of 70mph, the cars at that time were much more unsafe in crash test then they are today. Those cars were a bit slower than they are today for example today's 2.0ltr engine develops much more torque and bhp then 10 years old 2.0ltr engine.

So when these engineers studied about the collusion at that time, they realised that with the cars they had tested, at 70mph, you would survive after a collision. But that doesn't count on nowadays cars. Today's cars are much more safer then ever and the motor industries are improving from day to day on this issue cause every driver nowadays is seeking for safety too when buying a car.

But the misfortune is this. This thing cannot be changed because we still see cars that are more than 10 years old on our streets and so the limit can't be adjusted to a higher one.

Hope this helps my friend. I know that this s**ks but we can do nothing about it.

Traffic engineers. They spent several years at university so that they could do studies on safety and traffic flow. Then they studied the studies, and came up with 70.

70mph was for cars back in the 60s when they could only go up to 70mph they need to up date it over in ireland its 120kph =75mph

i think that statistics might show that at that speed you might still survive a crash. i live in california, and our highway speed limits went from 55mph to 65/70mph (still 55 in some places). i think that public pressure might have something to do with increased limits, either in the US or the UK.

In 1964 when the 70 mph motorway speed limit was introduced, it was set at the "flat-out" speed of most cars on the road.
This speed was set by the Ministry of Transport.

Don't get all upset with people that answer your badly phrased and spelt questions.
If you make yourself clear then you will get the type of response you are looking for.

The Road Research Laboratory recommended that speed some years ago during the fuel crisis & the government adopted it. Prior to that the speed was unrestricted like Germany is today.

The minister of Transport is the one who decides that 70mph is the maximum speed .

Years ago I read a pamphlet issued by the Dept of Transport and it explained the reason why.

Apparently tests by the boffins showed that at speeds above 70mph the forces put on the car at that speed were outside the control of the average driver. At speeds below that limit the forces acting on the car should be controllable by the driver.

No doubt this would explain why most accidents are attributable to excessive speed.
