To those who have passed their test (preferably for some time so you can answer with experience) but has anyone else noticed that the standard of driving tuition has gone downhill massively lately. I live in a village that is a learner 'route' and while everybody has to learn, and there are errors made by pupils which can't be helped, I have noticed a huge catalogue of errors which can only be put down to the driving teachers.

Tell me about it, i had an instructor there for a while who i bought a lot of lessons from, he was basically renting me his car for an hour instead of teaching me something new, he kept making me drive about which i can do and he wouldn't teach me manoeuvres which is my bad point. |

They're just clearing a backlog. Ever heard of a license amnesty? They just give them out to people on second provisionals. |

Hi, I know that sometimes driving instructors are the cause of their pupil's errors - usually by pushing the pupil TOO far - this is quite common amongst the group of instructors that do one lesson after another, making the first pupil drive to the 2nd pupil's house and so on - no matter how much experience they have - this happened to me 11 years ago so as regards to the standard of driving tuition going down, I would say no - there have always been poor instructors and probably always will be.
However, as you haven't mentioned what the errors are, in your situation, I can not comment, but only assume that once again it is a case of instructor pushing the pupil too far.
We are not all like that you will be surprised to know. Unless a pupil lives on a nice quite estate, I will always (on the first lesson) drive the pupil there, explaining what we will be doing, and showing how I drive. I will then let them drive around a nice quiet area until I know they can cope with the big scary main roads - then, and only then, do I let them loose on the general public!
One final thing to maybe consider, as you say your village is on a "learner route" I can only assume you mean that learners get taken there on test? If this is the case, then if the learner makes a mistake and the accompanying driver doesn't correct it, it might be because they are an examiner and NOT the actual instructor?
Hope this provides a little reassurance that we're not all crap and some of us do consider the other motorists on the road!

There are of course, good and bad driving instructors.
Their role is to guide their pupils to attain sufficient basic safety and knowledge of road rules that they can gain a license. They do not have to judge anything other than the possibility of their pupil passing their driving test.
It is up to the examiner as to whether any particular driver should be licensed to drive on the roads.
Then the learning continues.
Unfortunately, it is not possible to teach anyone all the skills and wisdom required to be a good driver.
These can only come with experience. Most eventually make it. Some never do. Maybe some of these will become driving instructors.
But so will some of the excellent ones.
Either way, they cannot do more than already stated. They can only provide a very basic service. |
