The objects in the mirror appear closer than they actually are in real life.

Rather than being flat, the mirror has a slight convex shape, allowing it to provide a wider field of vision. The tradeoff is that objects in the mirror look smaller than they really are - so an image that is reflected in the mirror is actually closer than it appears to be.

The driver's side mirror is flat, so you have to remember that images in each mirror are at different distances behind you.

At the link below, there is a tip on how to adjust both mirrors so you can eliminate virtually all of the blind spots.

It mean that you have a "wide angle" mirror, this allows you to see more than you would naturally with your eye.

Remember that what you are seeing is actually closer in reality than it appears in the mirror.

This is designed to help with blind spots, but is no subsitue for over the shoulder checks.

They're closer than they appear in the mirror.

This question reminded me of the Gary Larsen cartoon, seen from the point of view of a driver looking at the mirror with that phrase on it. Reflected in the mirror is a gigantic eyeball.
