On the roads today why is this...?

why is the drivers seat on the right of the car when it is closer to the otherside of the road traffic, isnt it more dangerous incase u have a head on collision with the other side of the road?
dont you think it makes sense?

Yeah I think it's more dangerous and it doesn't make sense the way that it is.

jeanimus
If it was on the left side it would be more dangerous as you wouldnt be able to see past the car in front to the road ahead.

It's about visiblity dear. The nearer the middle of the road you are the more you can see around upcoming bends in both directions, and if you can see you most likely won't have a head on collision.

Common sense love.

Well,

Do you want to stick 3/4 of your car onto the other side of the road before you can see that it's safe to overtake?

Simon
Its more dangerous for overtaking to sit on the kerb (near) side. That will cause more head on crashes.

Lemar J
It only makes sense if you plan on having a head-on when your drive. Your perspective on on coming traffic is actually greater on the right side. Ask any mailman...er..mailwoman..er person...whatever.

They will tell you that it is down right dangerous driving on the left. Too many blind spots with oncoming and passing traffic.

clappydoo
If you need to overtake, you need to see along the outside of cars in front as well as seeing those coming towards you. It also lets you see cars ahead that are going in or coming out of sideroads on the right.
As far as collision is concerned, the steering wheel is usually some protection; so the front passenger seat is the more vulnerable place anyway.

OK, history lesson:

When vehicles were drawn by horses, the driver would control the team of horses with a whip. (No, not in a cruel way). So that he had room to swing the whip, he would sit on the right (most were right-handed of course). To give himself a better view of the road ahead, he would drive on the left.

On the continent, most drivers actually sat on one of the horses (the "postilion" position), controlling them directly with his right-hand (of course). To make this easier, he'd sit on the rear left-hand horse, so he'd drive on the right side of the road, to see better.

So you can't get away from it - the best position for the driver is towards the middle of the road.

Ask anyone who's driven a left-hand drive car - it's much harder.

sitting on the left while driving on the right side of the road is done because it aides visibility when turning and maneuvering. just as in the UK they drive on the left but sit on the right.

If you were speaking from a Passenger's view point, would you be asking the same question?

that's the thrill of driving. to put your life on the line. if i got into a horrible car accident and lived and was terribly disfigured, i would get back on that car and do it again, go out with a bang. Like make a REAL grand theft auto and do all the bad things first, go nutz with the cops and felonies, then go drive off a cliff with fireworks in the background and stage dancers. lol.

if ur sear is on the right, that mean in ur country, you are driving on the left of 2 lanes in a 2way road.
If you part next the the side walk thats like 6 inch high, you will not be able to open the door....
