I agree that it is a distraction for the driver.I just wonder why drinking a coffee or eating a bagel is not considered a distraction.Hot coffee can spill , you have to feel for the cup holder even momentarily, .What about changing radio stations . I'm not trying to be funny but aren't accidents also caused by these distractions ? I don't want the gov't controling what freedoms we have left but it just doesn't make sense.Do you think it might be an enforcement issue?

Today on the internet there was a news story of a bus driver who caused an accident because he was texting. The other day I was a passennger in a catr and saw a man shuffling papers on the steering wheel. I've seen people drive with pets on their laps. I guess we need laws such as no talking on cell phones to protect the rest of the riding public. The person who mentioned that talking on the phone while riving is seldom for an emergancy.

Whether talking on a cellphone is the number one cause of accidents or not doesn't really matter. The point is that it's one thing we can do to help. People will never stop drinking coffee, or changing radio stations, but a law about cellpones might encourage them to go out and get a bluetooth device.

We've had this law in Quebec for over a year now, and I've seen a noticeable difference in the amount of people using cellphones. I think it's good idea. Honestly, what could be so damn urgent that you have to endanger yours and other peoples' lives for?

I think that it's good that the law was passed. Too many people are careless & use Cellphones even in busy highways & many accidents have happened b/c of it.

Yes they are and you are completely correct but cell phones have gotten completely out of hand all together......

Cell phone usage is one of the biggest distractions. There is a reason they are outlawing only cell usage while driving. IT IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. It is causing an inordinate amount of accidents, and has been proven to impair your driving ability as much as being intoxicated slightly above the legal limit. And that is talking on a celly, much les texting, which has to be one of the most irresponsible things i can think of while driving, right with concentrating on your make-up in the mirror, or reading a book.(the only reason those two aren't illegal is that most people have the common sense not to do them)

I am a huge advocate of personal freedom, and I believe that the cops should have to catch you speeding, or not wearing you seat belt, ect, and not have your behavior tracked by gps or camera, but there is a place for reasonable rules as well. What cell phone rights are important enough to endanger everyone else on the road? the right not to wait ten friggen minutes to talk about your shoes, or your last date?

You can be pulled over by the Police for ALL the above infractions. Thet are covered under a blanket law which covers ''PROPER CARE AND CONTROL''' of a motor vehicle.

Some car manufacturers have improved slightly on the safety of distracts to keep you from keeping your eyes off the road. For example, in our Honda Civic, they have a seperate larger digital speed counter on the dashboard so you don't have to look down.

In recent cars, like the Scion xD, and many other car types, have included radio controls on your steering wheel, which has made driving a lot easier.
