Painting Crash Helmets?

Does painting a crash helmet reduce the effectiveness or make it more brittle?

I know it used to back in the day. (70-80's)

if the helmet is made from fibreglass then its perfectly safe to add stickers to it or have it sprayed.if youre in the uk there are loads of sprayers who will do this, expect to pay 200quid plus depending on what design you want putting on it.dont try and do it youreself,if you get spray on the inside of the helmet the polystyrene inner will begin to disintergrate rendering the helmet useless.if the helmet is of the polycarbonate (plastic) type then you cannot have it sprayed as the spray will react with the helmet making it brittle, you shouldnt even put stickers on thease type of helmet.

Leave well alone, you dont know how a particular solvent or mixture of solvents, if thinning paint ,for example, is going to react with the plastic

Adze
Saw a program on TV awhile back on this subject
and painting your helmet certainly weakened it,so no be safe
and leave well enough alone

as long has the crash helmet is not already damaged it should be OK - make sure to use specialist paints

I dont think you should paint them.

It can make them more brittle, not advised. use the specific transfers available

If its really important I'd contact the manufacture and see what their recommendation is for your specific helmet. In addition to providing details about the safety of the procedure they may be able to recommend a list of materials best suited to the task.
