Parallel Parking help ?
|
I am taking my driving test in a couple of weeks and all I need to do is brush up on a few skill. My three-point turns are good as are my reverse around corners and my bay parking.
No matter how much I practise, I cannot seem to parallel park properly. Its a bit hit and miss so sometimes its ok but others i hit the curb. Can anyone give any tips? I can do up to the reversing so the cars are level and then you turn in but thenmy reference points are all over the place.
Can anyone tell me what 'reference points' I should look out for and when to turn my wheel back to straighten up. Thanks!! Additional Details Thanks for the rude comments about me being a woman and the sarcastic comments!
But genuine thanks to the non-chauvanistic answers and the people offering genuine help!!

Hi Princess, I am an ex driving instructor so can offer you some help. The parallel park is not an easy manoevoure when learning it but it is all about keeping the car moving slowly with good clutch control, all round observation and using the correct amount of steering. Your first reference point is as you say when the cars have become level. At this point, look in your blind spot for passing vehicles and then give one complete steer (360 degrees) to the left and then hold the wheel still. When moving back towards to the kerb keep the observation going and when you have lined up your second reference point which tells you that your car is level with the one you are reversing behind, make 2 full complete steers (360 degrees) to the right. This should make you straighten up perfectly behind the car and then brake to a stop. A good 2nd reference point to identify just before you begin your 2nd steer is when you feel your nearside break lights have aligned exactly with the break lights on the car in front. Hope this makes sense. Good luck. |

Its one turn on two off then one back on - however it depends what car you have as to what reference points you look for. |

You are allowed to move your mirrors to do a manoeuvre as long as you ask 1st and put them back before you start driving again. This really helped me as i could see the curb which meant that i didn't hit it. |

Well - when i learnt my teacher told me to find the space and drive up next to the car 1 spaces in front, start reversing turneing into the space then look in the small window slightly behind the back seats, when you see the pavement start to disappear start straightening up, i still park that way and is it always perfect - with a 3inch gap between the wheels and pavement. You'll be fine!!! |

what a load of useless crap! I think katt and welsh lad are the only ones talking any sense - has everyone else left their brains in bed when they got up?!!
Sadly, noone on yahoo! answers can help you with this, as we don't know what car you are driving!! Also, unless we have the same car as you, we cannot advise you on how to parallel park - as the reference points vary for different cars! For all I know, you could be in a Smart ForTwo or you could be in a Ford Mondeo!
The best advice I can give you, if you have your test in a couple of weeks is this:
Find an instructor if you don't have one, get them to assess your driving and teach you how to parallel park PROPERLY! And if necessary - put your test back until you are ready for it - too many people go in for test when they're not ready - don't risk it! |

Line up next to the car you're going to reverse behind, once there start reversing slowly and once the back of the car you're next to gets half way in your rear left window, turn the wheel once to the left, or if it's tighter than that, full lock. Remember to keep your observations going throughout.
Then, once you are a split second away from being parallel (your observation should be in your wing mirror here) turn the wheel briskly to the right and you should be in with no problems.
Remember, your wheels do not have to be straight when you finish this manoeuvre. As long you're parallel that's the main thing. It also makes it easier to move off when you're ready to do so.
Good luck :) |

Why don't you get a couple of plastic buckets, go to a remote area and position the buckets as if they are the offside corners of two parked cars with a space between in which to park. Then practice parking in that space. If you touch the buckets no damage will occur but you'll get the practice you feel you need. |

Use your turn signal to indicate the direction of the parking spot.
If the space is not yet vacant but the car in it is about to leave, wait behind the spot.
When the space is vacant, pull ahead of it until you have pulled up beside the car parked in front of the space. Your rear bumper should be even with that car's rear bumper with about 2 feet of road between you.
Put the car in reverse. Begin to back up slowly; as soon as the car starts moving, turn the wheel as far as it will go toward the curb.
Back slowly into the space.
When the back of your car's front door is even with the rear bumper of the car beside you, begin turning the wheel away from the curb.
Continue turning the wheel away from the curb and backing slowly into the space.
Straighten out the wheel, then pull forward or back in the space as needed to center yourself between the cars in front of and behind you.
Your car should be 6 to 8 inches from the curb when you are parked. |

I guess I was lucky but in 2001 when i got my drivers licence in Nevada... they never parallel park tested me. It took about 4 years of regular driving to get it down.
Best advice is to just slam into the bumpers in front and behind you that will tell you when you cant go anymore. If one of the hits is kinda rough offer your DMV driver an Advil for her neck and tell her if she doesnt pass you youll make her chew it and not offer her a sip of your pepsi in your hand. |
