the correct answer is you are NOT required to put any car in gear but you should apply the parking brake. it's what it was designed for.
on a slope turn the steering so that the car will be directed into a kerb or wall ect in order to stop it rolling 'should' the parking brake fail.
by putting it in first gear it reduces the rate a car will roll at if the brakes failed (unlikely but remotely possible)
it can also be in reverse but either is satisfactory as they are both LOW ratio gears thus making the engine do lots of resistance in any rolling action of the car ( engine is forced to turn over more than in other gears)
try and make a habit of always checking its in neutral before starting as you had to do when you went for your driving test.
also its a good idea to depress clutch pedal when turning an engine over just in case you forget and its in gear. can save money and bruised ego etc.

If the vehicle is facing uphill then yes, lowest forward gear.

If the vehicle is facing downhill then engage reverse gear.

It is wise ,when parked on any gradient,to turn the steering wheels into a position that will force the vehicle into the kerb or any structure that will minimise potential danger should the parking brakes fail.

Yes but after youve switched the engine off, other wise it will stall

If your facing up the hill put it in first, otherwise put it in reverse, just remeber to take it out of gear before you start back up!

Depends whether you're facing up or down the hill. If you're facing down the hill it's better to put the car in reverse.
And remember to always use the clutch when you start the car!

Put it in 1st if you are pointing up the hill or reverse if pointing down. You should also turn your steering wheel so that the front wheels are at an angle .

Tigerlily wants blood.
You can put the car in any gear to park, along with the handbrake of course!

UCANTCME
That will work but remember to put the handbrake on as well.
