People still using mobile phones whilst driving, whats the next step?

I know, this infuriates me, especially since having my son, its like 'put your own life in danger if you like but how DARE you endanger our lives!!', sorry rant over!! I like the idea of the signal blocking device tho!

It needs law enforcement, they can stop cyclists without lights at the same time. Car manufacturers would not want to install blockers as noone would want that feature and it would make cars more expensive compared to rivals. Also it wouldnt be discriminating enough so if you drove past a pedestrian using a mobile it would interfere with that too.

I like that idea, they should put little cell phone jamming device in cars just as they require emmission controls, they just require cellular controls.

Obvious isn't it? Nothing will be done until they invent a camera that can detect mobile phone users, burger munchers, map readers, crossword doers (it's true - I saw it myself) and make-uppers. Until then they will just get away with it 99.9% of the time.

Then there are all the uninsured, untaxed, unlicensed drivers, the cutter-uppers, tailgaters, corner cutters, drugged up, near blind, overly cautious and downright dangerous.

When do we see a copper? When we go 5mph over a 40mph limit on a totally empty road.

If found using a mobile phone confiscate the phone. Second time caught confiscate the car as they do now for no insurance. That would soon stop this bad habit.

Its downright dangerous if they want to risk their lives that's up to them but they are also endangering innocent people
I don't answer my phone when I'm driving i never have even before this law came out

Better quality hands free systems. Currently the hands free kits are generally rubbish which is why people don't use them. If a good system was designed that wasn't intrusive and was clear at both ends there would be no excuse. I always use the loudspeaker on my phone, It means I have to press 2 buttons instead of one, but I don't need to look at the phone to find either as the loudspeaker button is at the upper left corner of the phone, exactly where you put your thumb when you grab a phone, and the loudspeaker is sensitive enough that quality is not impaired much. I'd suggest manufacturers have good quality and easily accessible loudspeaker systems fitted to all phones.

I know it's annoying. Speed cameras don't catch motorists like this.

Well they need to do something i tell you. Yesterday morning i saw a woman with 3 kids in the back of her car, and she had NO hands on the wheel, talking on phone with one hand - and putting make up on with other ! I thought i`d seen it all but there you go - always one.............................

It annoys the hell out of me too...they have no consideration for other motorists. I saw a woman yesterday talkign on phone and as she overtook me I saw her two kids in back, what a good mother.

Not sure what the next step is, you cant stop someone completely - its like drink driving, you are always going to get some idiot doing it..

I think it's something we're all guilty of it at some point. Next step, i think is some type of hand held scanner for police that they just point at motors and instantly know if someone in that vehicle is on phone. Prob be able to tap into phone too, record conversation, owners details, phone number etc. That way they'll not have to be following directly behind you to know that you're on phone while driving.

I agree it is dangerous. There is a sharp bend near my house and often people drive fast around it, while not even paying attention tot he road - and chatting on their phones. Accidents can happen that way - theres a school by that bend as well, and its totally irresponsible for drivers to pay so little attention.

Some speed camera take photos of the drivers don't they? If someone is seen using a phone on one of those cameras then they could get points?

You hear stories of women putting on makeup while driving, men shaving while driving, eating.

I've seen people not drive in the fast lane but overtake me at a high right of speed, whipping in and out of lanes all the while on the phone, the windows down and the stereo blairing.

Maybe if Henry Ford saw all this he'd have thought twice. With a horse and buggy, I appears to me the horse had more sense than some of these drivers today.

first of all you are talking about someone else driving so as a passenger, what the hell do you care about someone else in traffic as long as you are not in danger?

second of all, sounds from the description you gave, that guy deserves his BMW, more people should be able to drive, talk on a phone and take notes at the same time.. since you are so observant, maybe you can find a career out of it instead of sticking your nose upon others' buttocks and make yourself useful. Try birdwatching for the discovery channel, or at least listen to yourself and realize people that get killed on the road everyday would have wished they had your ride instead of the one that ended their life..
