People who use mobiles whilst driving??

Despite this being illegal for quite some time now, I still see many people using their phones whilst driving. In my experience, the main offenders fall into the following categories and in this order:-
1. Female drivers
2. 'white van man'
3. Young Asian men.
4. Skip lorry/tipper drivers
5. Overweight businessmen who obviously have enough money to buy a decent handsfree kit for their car.
Do you agree with my own experiences? Do you have any other opinions? Most importantly, do you have any ideas on how this can be stopped, as simply making it illegal has had little effect.

David Rowbotham - No not scared - Have I hit a raw nerve? Do you fall into one of my categories?
Gilljay - Yes it's difficult to police it - even giving the registration/date/time of an offender to police who could then cross-check with a phone provider would still need actual proof. The only way I see that happening is with photographic/video evidence to back it up - again - how would that be done without breaking the law yourself?

Agree wholeheartedly. The worse one I saw was a paramedic!!! He should know better than most. We should be able to phone in somewhere to report them and police should check with their mobile phone line provider - somehow. Don't know how that would be enforceable though........

I Agree with the list, i was nearly hit by a woman turning at a roundabout without any signals as she had the phone plastered to her ear, i was also nearly hit by a guy in a van on the by pass the other day as he swerved into the opposite traffic whilst using his mobile phone.

It`s hard though - coz also I`ve seen people eating, drinking, messing around looking for c.d.`s and putting make-up on.... which is worse really?

Practically impossible to stop, but I do think that too much emphasis is placed on mobile phone usage, as others have said it applies to eating, reading, looking at maps etc. I also find it totally amazing that some one will spend 50 or 60,000 pounds on a car and not use a hands free kit - you can buy a Parrot for £100 that connects to the stereo, and makes it much safer.

Alter the law so that ordinary people can report the offender and if the time checks and the phone records tie in with that report... then fine the STUPID users £150 FOR 1ST OFFENCE £500 FOR THE SECOND AND MAKE IT COMPULSORY for ALL UK phone companies to ban that person FROM the NETWORKS for a 3rd offence... BANNING even off road use-age... plus, include anyone who aids and abets them to gain access. TWO years shut out should drum some sense into even the dumbest twerp/s

You can't pick out particular sections of society who are creating this danger it is in all sections of society.
I think that anybody caught using a mobile phone whilst driving should have the phone immediately confiscated by the Police and if convicted and hopefully fined heavily their mobile phone including the sim card should by destroy.

you for got to mention male drivers & bus drivers i think most people try & get away with it, they should bring a sensor out that is fitted to every car so when the phone goes in the car its cut off, also smokers shoulnt be able to smoke whilst driving

one call the police and tell them to get there id and that should work i hope

Using a cell phone while driving can be considered a distraction for sure.I do however think this fear is given too much attention. As a truck driver I have seen people driving and working crossword puzzles, reading the paper, using laptops. They either have the laptop in the passengers seat or sitting on the steering wheel.I have seen several people driving with both feet folded underneath them in the seat.

It seems like no one can live without his or her cell phones these days. That seems especially true for teenager drivers, which should have been number 1 on your list.

Ban all cell phones and have a minimum fine of $1000.00 except for emergencies.

You are paying too much attention to the other drivers and not enough attention to driving. This (paying attention to someone else instead of to driving) is exactly why cell phone use while driving is dangerous.

if you are that scared that they might kill you wrap yourself in cotton wool and don't drive
