With the fuel costs as they are now do you think the local governments should help to build better sidewalks and cross walks for the people who choose not to pay the high costs of having a car and walk to their destinations.

People who walk have plenty of rights - drivers often forget that. Except for a few examples (negligence, walking around drunk, etc.) the law favors pedestrians. If you choose to walk, there are certain risks and responsibilities you do have to accept - most of which involve keeping yourself in a position to not get hit. If you are in a crosswalk and get hit, you may be in the right - and likely in the hospital or morgue. If enough people want sidewalks, they will vote for them in the form of taxes or local improvement districts. If not, then find the safest place to walk. |

Wow, i read the comments and lightshow hit it right on the head. I agree! There are rights for pedestrians. But, we need to be aware that some people don't always remember that the pedestrians have right of way. So that's when we have to use our common sense and walk where we can be seen, and also wear the proper reflective attire at night. |

Lightshow has made some excellent points on this one... Pedestrians do have rights, and the laws mostly favor them, but you must remember that "Right Of Way" is not something you take... It's something the other guy gives to you. |

If people want better walking conditions, they should pay for them. Highways are paid for with fuel taxes! Why should I pay more in taxes to subsidize sidewalks. Let's put a tax on the pedestrians, and part of that money should pay the property owners who are forced to accept sidewalks (and the people using them) on their property!! |
