Plead no contest?
Find answers to your legal question.

Plead no contest?

I recv'd a traffic citation. I do not want to plead guilty neither do I want to be found guilty.

How do I just plead no contest. Can I just mail in the citation with the fine? I'm in Wisconsin.

yes you can mail it in. But you will be paying the maximum amount. Showing up and even pleading not guilty, if you are found guilty, will save you some cash and it might even get dropped from your record.

yes you can mail it in you should have been sent a letter from the court house if not then you have to go down there or call them for an envelope and to ask how much it is. You could also show up in court and plead no contest but there is really no need to waste the courts time to do that

DeltaQueen
Yeah, you can mail it in, but it will be considered a guilty plea.

I am from minnesota.... for a regular traffic violation over here (that doesn't require a appearance in court) if you just want to mail in the payment with your citation there will be no court date.... (but of course if you pay the fine you are of course pleading guilty) otherwise you will need to go to the court hearing and sit through it and they will probably say you are guilty anyway... (the officer will attend and state what happened so as long as he shows up you are basically guilty.) now if he doesn't show up you end up being not being charged... personally all small violations are not worth the time in court if you can just pay it & be done with it... P.S. don't just ignore the citation--- there will be a warrant out for your arrest.

If you can plead no contest it won't help or hurt you. The fine and points will be the same either way.

What you can do will be reflected on the ticket itself. Follow the instructions. If the option of mailing in the fine is not marked off, then you will have to appear in court on the date specified. If there is no court date specified, you'll receive a summons in the mail.

no contest doesn't mean you are not guilty, it mean you have no defence to the charge...pay your fine and go on... or waste your time trying to get out of a fine you deserve.

If you have a clean record then go to court and when asked how do you plead ask the opposing attorney if you take a drivers course will he drop the charges. I did this with my 21 yr. old son and it worked wonderfully. But pleading no contest is like saying "I'm stupid and would like to pay as much as I can for this mistake." I know your not stupid so go and plead not guilty. And good luck!!!

Just plead guilty and get it over with...pay it then take a safety course to keep it from your insurance company. That's exactly what I did...no regrets.
