Proper way to drive automatic vehicles?

if you are approaching a steep downward slope, do you need to reduce your speed before shifting from 'D' to lower gear. thank you

well i was always taught that when I'm going uphill I'll use the 1 and 2 gear, because it is putting a strain on the vehicle. But going downward I would just have it in D. |

The speed of the vehicle doesn't "really" have anything to do with it. It is the RPM of the engine that you have to worry about, just the same as a standard shift transmission. When you downshift drastically you run the risk of over revving the engine and causing damage. Your best bet is to slow down before downshifting with an automatic transmission. I assume you are doing this during slippery conditions, in which case you want the engine at a low RPM, so that when you shift into a lower gear, you don't get a bunch of torque that you don't want, or need. |

No. You can downshift on the fly unless shifting into low @ 100 mph. Pretty much same as with stick. |

No.
Its an automatic. Put it in D and leave it alone unless youre in the mountains or towing. |

Some might suggest to downshift to a lower gear when descending a steep grade. Don't do it...causes wear and tear on tranny. Brakes are cheaper than transmission repairs. Leave it in drive...unless you're backing up...then best to put it in reverse...*wink* |

The engine and gears should compensate for the conditions you drive in. I had an automatic once. It jammed in second gear and stayed that way for 3 miles before it cleared. I would never have another automatic They are petrol guzzlers |

Keep your vehicle in D all the time. |
