when you stop at traffic behind a car,you stopped with your foot brake and have been driving on gear 2,when your preparing to go,do you have to bring the gear back to gear 1?

Usually, you do shift down to first gear. Really, though, it's possible to start in second gear or even third. Unless, of course, you have a particularly weak engine, in which case you would always shift down to first.
One time, I was at a stoplight, and I thought I shifted down to first, but I was really still in third gear. I was still able to get the car moving, it was just really slow. Even though it's possible to start in high gears, I wouldn't recommend doing it too often. You have to let the clutch slip a lot more to start moving, and that kind of wears it out. Then you get stuck with the bill for a new one. |

Assuming you ask about a manual transmission, if you try restarting the car in second gear, it would require excessive wear on the car's clutch to fully engage the tranny without stalling.
It CAN be done, but you'd wear out the clutch a lot sooner than it would need.
Think about it this way, if you didn't need the first gear to start the car moving, why would they bother to HAVE a first gear? |

Absolutely, or you'll stall out and look foolish. When your driving a manual which is very kool, everytime you come too a stop take the car out of gear and keep foot on the brake. When light changes, engage the vehicle starting in 1st gear. |
