i have a 1979 el camino, and im wondering what the seat belt requirments are on it. do i have to have seatbelts? do i just have to have lap belts? or do i have to have the shoulderstraps too?

ok, whoever answered first, pay attention, its an el camino, no back seats.

I live in Texas plus I have been doing vehicle inspection for over 30 years......
Question 1. Yes you need to have seat belts.
Question 2. You need to have what came with the car when it was built.
Question 3. The lap belt in the middle is all that you need.. |

What ever came factory on that model is all you need to be compliant with the law.
Additional info: It doesn't matter if you've replaced the OEM seat with something more comfortable, but the seat belts must be the same as if it just came off the assembly line in 1979. Lap belts alone will most likely not be enough to keep the cops off your butt or allow your El Camino to pass any state safety inspections (if your state requires annual inspections) since it did come with the 3 point harness in 1979. |

What ever it was originally equipted with is what you are required to have. A '79 would have shoulder straps in the front and lap belts in the back |
