Question for a novel I'm writing?

Someone is driving on the freeway. Without noticing, they take their foot off of the gas pedal. They slow down and car driving behind them hits them. Make sense?

Not so much someone taking their foot completely off the gas pedal. However, many drivers who get distracted while talking on the cell phone, changing radio stations, lighting a cigarette, unwrapping a sandwich, etc. will insinctively slow down, without noticing. The brain knows that it is distracted and the person will "know" that reaction time is slowed, so the car is slowed down to "allow" more time or room to react.

Of course, since the mind is already distracted, the driver may not become aware of a hazzard until it is too late, even at the reduced speed.

In your book scenario, what may be likely is that the front driver slows down for the reasons I've shown, but, to anyone else, for no apparent reason. Another driver, following behind may be also distracted and does not notice the front car slowing down and plows into him.

Does this work for your story?

Yeah, if you're driving in rush hour in Atlanta. Those fools drive 85+ two feet from each other's rear bumper eight lanes wide and ten miles deep.
Ugh.....

Christine V
No, it doesn't make sense. Because nobody really takes their foot off of the gas without noticing.

If the person driving behind them is drunk teenager, sure thing.

No, it does not.
First, if the driver is not tailgating, then they have time to react to the slow reduction in speed. The lack of a brake light will be the deciding factor. The decision making process has to determine the car in front is REALLY slowing down before the brain decides what to do about it.
That is the reason for the 2 second rule. In my book, a 4 to 5 second rule is much safer.
I for one do not care to try out for NASCAR. Yet I see groups of cars traveling at 75 plus in a 55 mph zone with about 1 car length between each vehicle.
Hope this helps.

I suppose that could happen. Your brake lights wouldn't come on, so there's no immediate warning. The thing is, would you slow down fast enough to cause an accident? Perhaps if you were traveling uphill, you would.

Yes it makes since if they are trying to make a little money from the person that hits them from behind.....
