Question on driving with parking brake?

hi

when i started my car,without realizing that the parking break was on, i reversed the car and it got reversed and then when i drove forward, it started giving a screashing sound,and was slowly moving forward

and then i realized about the parking break,and removed the parking break....and it was fine

but i have two question

1.if the parking break was on, how did it got reversed
2. since i tried to drive forward,with the parking break on,would there be any internal damage

and this is in 2001 chevy impala

Don't worry. You did not do any damage. You have self adjusting brakes (everyone does). When you went backward the self adjusters were functioning (they do this when you go in reverse). When you went forward the brakes grabbed as they are supposed to do. The nature of brake systems is such that if you leave the parking brake on, it will allow most cars to back up easily, but "grab" as soon as you go forward. It's normal. You have done nothing with any lasting ill effect. Relax. Things went just as expected.

since it was brief, there should be no harm done.

In regards to why the vehicle moved, reverse is a very low and powerful gear as is 1st gear. the amount of movement is directly related to how firm the parking brake was applied.

it's ok that you drove with it on it allows you to still move that is the emergency brake it is used only if your actual brakes are out so therefore it doesn't stop as well as regular brakes and that would be the reason that you were able to reverse and still go forward even with some resistance

How did it got reversed? Hmm.
Reverse is transmission. E-brake is rear brakes. The e-brake helps hold the car in place but does not fully stop it from moving if you press the gas pedal. The car WILL move with the e-brake on. Doesn't matter what kind of car it is. The car is fine. Just don't keep doing that. If you pay attention to the lights on the dash and what's going on, you won't drive with the e-brake on.

it will still go revers but not as smoothly with the brake on.there will be damage to the rotor if you drove it with the brake on to much.

1. The parking brake is either worn out or needs adjustment.

2. Yes and no, depending on how far you drove but it would be a good idea to have the brakes checked out anyway.
