Contrary to popular belief. Shock absorbers do not absorb shocks. It is a misnomer. The car springs absorb the suspension movement when travelling over bumps. The so called shock absorbers are actually dampers. They reduce the spring oscillation very effectively so that the car tyres return quickly to contact with the road surface immediately after hitting a bump. Without dampers the car would bounce up and down in an uncontrolled manner which would affect steering and grip adversely. |

A shock absorber in common parlance (or damper in technical use) is a mechanical device designed to smooth out or dampen shock impulse, and dissipate kinetic energy |

All cars have four shock absorbers, or suspension dampers - they're the same thing.
A car's wheels are seperated from the body by springs to isolate the shock of bumps & holes in the road. Normally, springs continue to bounce several times after any movement, so shock absorbers are fitted along with each spring to 'damp' out the movement & bring the springs to a standstill in a more controlled & quicker manner.
If you push down hard on a corner of a car & let go, it should bounce back & then settle back straight away. With faulty or worn shock absorbers, the body will continue to bounce several times before stopping. |

It is actually a DAMPER unit to prevent excessive movement in the suspension.
Check this link out it explains far better than I can

Shock absorbers aka Shocks are used with the suspension (not to be confused with the suspension). It basically means if you go over a speed bump, the force will push the suspension down, the shocks job is to stop the car from bouncing.
You can test the shocks by pushing the rear or front of the car down, if it springs up and stays there the shocks are ok. If it keeps bouncing for more than a few seconds your shocks have had it.
Hope that helps. |

it is a dampening unit...inside the ''shocker'' is thin oil [somtimes gas] that passes various valves converting friction into heat.... |

All four wheels of a car have shock absorbers or struts. Their function is self-explanatory -- they absorb the majority of the shock when a car hits a pothole or something like that, giving your car a smoother ride. Struts are modified shock absorbers that are also designed to improve your car's handling. Many cars only have struts on the front tires, so that's where you may have heard the term "rear shock absorbers." |

Hi Moonfruit,
Yes, rear shock absorbers are usually located in the rear of vehicles, so that in the event of a crash, when the car is hit, some of the strain is taken off.
Basically, it is to make a 'Hit' more comfortable for you.
