You do understand that the dip stick does not go into the oil filler hole? You take dipstick out of it's holder and clean it, then put it back into the holder, take out and there you have it the oil mark between min./ max.

I had a pupil and when he was asked how did you check the oil level in the car, he took out the dipstick and undid the oil filler cap and tried to put the stick into the engine.......

Untill it stops. there should be something at the top of the dipstick for you to hold onto, when that wont go in any further

u take the dipstick out and look at the end. if it looks like there is a lot of oil on the stick then u r fine. if when u take it out the oil is close to the end then you most likely need to add some more.

If you are doing average mileage (200 per week) then you'll be ok checking it once a week.

To check the oil, when the engine is cold/not been started -

1. take out the dipstick and wipe it clean with a rag.
2. Fully insert it into the pipe/hole ensuring that the "cap" has located into place.
3. Wait 5 seconds.
4. Remove the dipstick and note where the level is indicated between the full & empty marks (which are usually notches or holes in the dipstick).

Repeat the above steps to ensure you got an accurate reading first time round.

If the engine is hot - switch off and wait 5 minutes before checking the oil.

If the level reaches minimum (or below) add approx half a litre of oil through the filler cap (on top of the engine on most cars), wait 2 minutes and check the level again. Continue to add in quarter litre increments (remebering to wait 2 mins between checks) until the level shows as approx 3/4 between min and max.

The reason you have to wait is because the channels that the oil passes through to reach the sump at the bottom of the engine are narrow and the oil takes a bit of time to flow through them. If you check it too soon you could end up overfilling the engine which can cause serious problems.

If you are unsure, ask a friend, family member or neighbour to show you. Its really easy to do, once you've been shown you'll have the hang of it in no time.

Forget it.... I suggest that you just take it to the garage and ask them to check it for you.

Same answer for roadworthy tyres.
Same answer for brake fluid.
Same answer for checking your handbrake or brakes.
Same answer for power steering.
Same answer for windscreen washer.
Same answer for headlights and tail lights.
Same answer for coolant.
Same answer for tyre pressure.

The list goes on........ alternatively, go over the Tell Me/Show Me questions again.

If you park your car in the same place most of the time be aware of anything that leaks onto the floor - it is always a bad sign.
There are lots of different oils and fluids under the bonnet that need to be there to let the thing run and stop properly.
Brake Fluid, Coolant, Washer Fluid, Power Steering Fluid etc
check them all regularly

It is good practise to check it at least every 2 weeks.

Remove the dipstick when your car has been at rest with the engine off for at least 10-15 minutes and then wipe it dry then place the dipstick in fully like it was before leave for a few seconds then pull it out again and you will have your accurate oil reading.
