Right of way?

Can someone settle an argument between me and my brother?
At a crossroads where two side roads directly opposite each other join a main road, does the car turning right or left have right of way over one going straight over junction. Alternatively if both are turning right/straight does the person who got to the junction first have right of way. I have asked a number of people and keep getting different answers

the one going strait on has right of way , if turning you should treat it like a roundabout and give way to the right |

There's a lot of babble being written on this one, first off, nobody on a UK road has 'right of way' over any other road user, you can however have 'priority'. Vehicles making a turning manoeuvre lose priority to a vehicle keeping a straight course. If both vehicles at the cross roads are turning right you should have been taught to make eye contact with the other driver which as we all know, will sort out priority by common courtesy |

Unless there are road signs stating otherwise -
In the UK and most other 'drive on the left countries' the general rule is Give Way to oncoming traffic from your Right.
Think about how roundabouts work and it's obvious.
In the case of crossroads, or any other junction, the traffic travelling straight ahead will have priority - unless road signs or markings state otherwise.
It's a logical system and, coupled with courtesy on all sides, works well. Pity that the French also have 'priorite a droit', which actually causes accidents for them. |

At a crossroads when you are waiting at a give way or stop and turning left or following ahead...you would have priority over the vehicle on the other side if they were turning right -'accross your path'.
If you were turning right and the vehicle on the other side was turning to his left or following ahead then you would NOT have priority because you are 'crossing their path'.
If you were both turning right, neither of you has priority....get some eye contact and proceed with caution.when safe...if the other vehicle moves first allow him to turn to be safe at the junction.
Priorities are different at a roundabout.
Hope this info helps.....a lot of the other answers are wrong! |

If both cars are coming from the side roads then the car turning onto the main road (going right or left) has the right of way, not the car going straight onto the other side road. If both are going straight on then they can go at the same time. Not sure about if they're both turning right, I gues they could go at the same time and go around the back of each other? |

No such thing as "right of way" other than in a book of famous last words.
All vehicles should pass driver's side to driver's side. |

The driver going straight ahead has priority. I had the same argument with my driving instructor when i was learning. Technically, you are crossing the path of the driver going straight on, therefore he has right of way. |

No one has right of way. |

on a UK road, if there is a crossroads with two junctions that directly face eachother you both have EQUAL right of way. the same at a staggered junction as well. it doesn't matter where you're turning or who got there first. you just judge the situation. i've been driving for 2 years, have 2 years no claims and passed my test with flying colours as well as my theory. trust me hun its EQUAL. the same applies if you come to a four-way roundabout, whoever you're opposite has the same right of way as you! xx |

The person who is turning RIGHT has the RIGHT of way. It's just like the law left turn on red. So the oppisite person would have to wait |

Erm, I think that the term "right of way" does not in fact exist in the UK Highway Code. It is in fact, PRIORITY
Refer to your Highway Code...
But in any event, be safe and let the other car go first, that way, you can be sure that you will not collide, crash or worse, and you will feel content with your driving skills.
Remember, if in doubt, DON'T PULL OUT!!! |

Position on the road rules .The vehicle turning right yields to the vehicle going straight on at crossroads. As with shipping ,you should never cut across the bows, rather around the stern,as when they are both turning right, unless road markings say different. If both are heading for the same direction, the vehicle turning left yields to the vehicle turning right. |

The person at the crossing first goes first. I ask my driving instructor cas I was unsure too. |

The general rule seems to be if you cross the others path you must give way.
The car going straight ahead has right of way. |

You treat is as though the junction markings were not there..so the car going straight on has the right of way over a car turning right across its path...as for two cars both turning right. no real rules, I usually use the maxim first come first served. |

Easy really. The vehicle crossing the least number of 'lanes' on main road has priority. Thus:- (from side road), vehicle turning left doesn't cross a lane, vehicle turning right crosses one lane and vehicle going straight over crosses two.
Two vehicles going straight over. No problem.
Two vehicles turning left. No problem.
Two vehicles turning right. Use commonsense if both arrive at about the same time, and, unless signed otherwise, go round each other.
One vehicle turning right, other vehicle going straight over, vehicle turning right has priority.
One vehicle turning left, other vehicle turning right, vehicle turning left has priority.
I think that covers it all. Hope it answers your question.
P.S.
Vehicle going straight on arrives at road ends first. That vehicle has priority.
Vehicle turning right arrives first. That vehicle has priority.
Vehicles arriving together, and moving off together. Vehicle turning right has priority, as vehicle going straight ahead is crossing the path of vehicle on main road . |
