Risk of rolling over for vehicle?

I was looking at a Mitsubishi Endeavor today and while I was test driving it today I saw a warning on the visor that said "High Risk of Roll Over" (or something like that, I'm not sure what the term is). It said that this risk is present if the car is going at high speeds or turns too fast that. My questions is how fast does the car have to be going/what type of turn has to made to be at risk for this? Is this a common risk in cars and how often does the roll over occur?

Essentially, the higher a vehicle's center of gravity, and the narrower the vehicle's track base, the higher the likely hood of a rollover.

Under certain conditions, a high center of gravity vehicle such as compact or mid size sub can roll over at fairly slow speeds, such as when braking hard to make a sharp turn. A lower center of gravity vehicle, such as an ordinary passenger car would probably slide before rolling. One cannot always predict such things. I can only cite the statistical likelyhood.

I once observed a full size SUV roll over on a freeway, going about 60 mph. He didn't hit anything to cause this. The driver merely overcorrected when he tried to avoid another car that he nearly cut off. So, he wasn't even making a sharp turn of any kind. He just let himself get unstable at a high rate of speed.

Get Over It!
They happen all the time. If they are "top heavy" like an SUV than they are very prone to rolling over. It is not necessarily the speed that is the problem, its the weight shift in the vehicle when you take the corner. Its not a common risk in cars because they're center of gravitydy it lower to the ground.

Friendly Stranger..
Rollovers usually happen with larger vehicles. They can happen with small cars as well, but large vehicles such as trucks, SUV, or anything of that sort tend to rollover easier. The reason why is because of the center of gravity and the weight distribution. Since cars are more light weight, the distribution is more even. But when you have a large truck, then the weight tends to shift depending on speeds. Higher speeds could mean more tendency to rollover. The speeds that cars can rollover would need to be in excess of 45+. Usually the rollovers happen when the driver is speeding. Also how it happens depends on the terrain, weather conditions, or the type of curve that the person is driving around. So curves such as S-Curves, or sharp bends may contribute to this because the weight is enacted upon by the speed. The force of the speed and the curve can cause the car to lose its center of gravity causing a rollover. But to be honest rollovers can happen to any vehicle, but its greater in large vehicles.

In a vehicle that has a high center of gravity, you dont have to be going very fast at all and unfortunatey, once you roll, the roof protection does not have to be very adequate either. Manufacturers are working towards not being held responsible for this problem as long as it was warned against, in this case it was. Check out the safety of your car first at NHTSA or some of the other sights mention

Mitsubishi Rollover Danger

In 2005, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety issued a report finding that the Mitsubishi Montero Sport made between 1999 and 2002 had the fifth highest driver death rate of the midsize two-wheel drive SUVs that were part of the study. The Mitsubishi Endeavor was created to update the Montero Sport which was discontinued in North America in 2004.
