Rules of the road - turning right?

Vehicles can turn right at a red light when it is permitted. My question is.. if there are two lanes turning right, can vehicles in the outer lane also turn right at a red light when it is clear and safe. I turn right even if I am in the outer lane but my uncle told me that is illegal. Is that true?

you have to be at the farthest right lane. closest to where you're turning, which is to the right. your uncle is right. |

In California, if there are two lanes designated for right turns, then either can turn on a red lignt when it is safe to do so, unless there is a sign prohibiting right turns on a red signal. |

I don't know about the outer lane. I think if you go into the right lane before you stop it is okay then. |

this would depend on your jurisdiction. I would suggest you search your state/provincial motor vehicle branch and get the driver's hand book and check it out. Each area is different. |

Yes you can turn right even if you are in the outer lane. The only time you cannot turn right if there is a sign that says no turn on red. The only thing you must do is yield to on coming traffic. It is only illegal if you are given the sign that says you can't turn on red. Just yield, and you are not making an illegal turn. |

In most places, if you are in a car in the right of the two right turn lanes, you may turn right on the red light.....However, most places will NOT allow a right on red from the left lane of two right turn lanes. In any case DO NOT roll through the red light. Stop and be sure it is safe to turn and buckle up. |
