SPEED LIMITS nobody likes to hear about children getting killed on our roads?

But how often do you hear, about someone getting run over on a motorway, that,s a fast road 70mph +. What about a duel carriageway sometimes but not often and that's a fast road, most of the trouble seems to be on 30-40mph zones in built up areas, which makes me wonder, do children feel safer where there are speed bumps and cameras, should they not be taught that any road is dangerous by there parents or maybe the parents should look after them better.

I teach my son to keep away from the roads - scare him in a way. I have had nightmares where my son is running from one side to another on a main road just missing cars each time. I think it the responsibility of a parent to ensure their child is safe at all times. A few years ago when I was in school. A 4 year old child was run over and killed because his mother left him outside a phone box while she made a call. This was on a busy dual carriage way. If that child was properly looked after - he would still be alive today (RIP). My son is 3 - so he isn't really aware of speed camera etc and he is very catious of the road - which is how I want it to stay!!!

Please punctuate properly folks.

There are no pedestrian crossings on motorways! Of course parents should look after their children better, but I would be harder on urban speeders. I always slow to the 20,30,or 40 limit, and have people honk and flash in their impatience with me.

adults get hit by cars too.

Teenagers are the worst for just stepping out and expecting a vehicle to stop immediately, especially those wearing iPods and chavs. And yes I agree parents should control young children and teach them sensible road safety.

ok what are you asking here??

First why would anyone let a child be alone on a motorway with cars 70+ mph

you can tell your children to be careful but unfortunately kids will be kids and some times if they think they can cross the road quicker than going to the lights or pedestrian crossing then they will

60% of injuries concerning motor vehicles happen in built up areas. Schools have stopped teaching the green cross code. And very few drivers on the road pay attention to their driving at all times.

There are so many areas to point the finger of blame at but the one thing that could be done to save lives would be better enforcement of the speed limits. 2 or 3 mph over the 30 limit can be the difference between life or death of someone you hit.

I only know these facts because I attanded a speed awareness course recently and it opened my eyes to a few things.

Safe driving everyone.

thing is maybe there shoud be big fences so people can only cross were they are allowed to

Just like there are "less intelligent" adults, there are "below average" children. Some children don't see the risks as well as others. My nephew is allowed to ride his bike in the street. My niece and daughter are to stay on the sidewalk. They are more likely to forget to look before they cross or enter the road. Till they mature to the point they can be trusted, they stay on the sidewalks. The street is a dangerous place to be a pedestrian. Drivers are more distracted more so than ever. Cell phones, PDAs, and other things don't seem to be helping the irresponsible.

You typically don't have a lot of pedestrians on 70mph road. In fact it is against the law in many areas to ride a bike or walk along a limited access rd (unless seeking assistance after a breakdown on th rd of course). Therefore your comparison is moot.

Most of the time it is the drivers fault when a pedestrian is hit. The driver fails to obey pedestrian crosswalks, or is speeding in a resident area.
