Safe way to cross live rail lines?
|
Is there a safe way to cross or deal with live 3rd-rail type (i.e. not overhead take-off) rail tracks. For example if it was necessary to cross them away from a dedicated crossing or to remove an obstruction from the centre of the track. (Body, tree branch, boulder etc)
Obviously correct course of action is to call the operator. But if it was necessary, how would one?

crossing tracks at anytime can be dangerous, but if you need to, first you would face the on coming trains, and before you do attempt to cross, you have to check if you have enough time to cross over to a safe place, this can be anything from 25 to 40 seconds, remember the trains can be going at over a 100 miles an hour.
you should never step on the sleepers,as they can be greasy from the oil drips from trains, always stand on the gravel, and never touch any rail, not even the running rails, and step over one at a time, you can step between the live and running rail,as long as you don't touch it.
but if there were a phone nearby, then use this,it could be a signal or engineering phone |

There is no safe way to cross.
If there is an obstruction, call to have the trains stopped before a train hits the obstruction. If using a phone is not possible, then walk along side (but not on) the track in the direction opposite the direction in which the trains go and flag down the first train you see. After you explain the situation, the train operator will radio the railroad dispatcher, who will stop the trains on the obstructed track and send someone who knows how to remove the obstruction safely. |

It's illegal, or at least it is in the UK, and you'll get a fine from £500 to £2000; so calling the operator they'll just tell you to go away since they're not going to disrupt their services just so someone can cross.
I remember seeing them do it on TV though, and two of the tracks are close together and the other one is further away. You stay away from the two that are next to each other, as one of them is live. Also cross sideways like a crab, not forwards as you're less likely to fall over. |
