Sat Nav in Cars?

Do you think that using Satelite Navigation is more dangerous than using a mobile whilst driving your Car?

No I have one in my truck and all I do is put in the information and then it tells me how to get there.
Information like
Street address
Street name. And go

Hmm... I think spoken instructions wouldn't be as confusing as trying to have a conversation with a snotty customer service agent, but trying to read the map might be too dangerous and stupid.

Sat Nav when used properly is great.

But....

people stick them onto the middle of their windscreens and obscure their forward view. They also follow the instructions absolutely, which is why you see stories of people driving into rivers as directed by the Sat Nav.

Best to fix it low down in the front screen so you can see the road ahead and to the sides (So you can see me on my Speed Triple) at road junctions. Enter your destination before you start or pull over as you would when on the phone. And use it as a guide only.

Actually it's safer than having a map out trying to navigate yourself. They are more frustrating at times, when there's road work and they want to keep sending you in loops back to the same street that's closed, etc.

We depend on ours for making deliveries between factories on time in strange cities. It may not always be the most logical route, and it seems that the satt. loses signal at the most inopportune times, but still, it's better than buying a ton of maps.

Another option, if you have a laptop computer and a way to secure it, is getting a program with a GPS locator like Streets and Trips. Until our laptop died, that's what we used, and it's much more detailed, allows for you to choose in advance to avoid certain areas, etc.

Don't know yet as honestly I've only just bought one today. I will be interested in others answers. Thanks for the question.

Not if properly used, such as with voice command features and never playing with or resetting while moving.

Barbie V
not at all if used correctly

Only if you are daft enough to program it whist driving.

Some would argue that anything in the car that requires you to take your eyes off the road or hands off the wheel (with the exception of changing gear) would be deemed a hazard.

I have a Sat Nav and it doesn't hinder my driving or cause a lapse in my concentration - however I know plenty out there who cannot use them because of the issues surrounding distraction.

Knownow't
No, because the Sat Nav is talking to you, much the same way you listen to a radio....so you can concentrate on the road ahead.

Not if used properly. Some have an optional mode that will refuse commands while the vehicle is in motion. If you feel uncomfortable playing with your nav unit while in motion you might want to select that option.

Not if it is used properly. If it was a danger to use in cars, it wouldn't have been invented.

UCANTCME
Nope.....

no, they are usually hands free, and give you directions like a passenger with a map would...

but i'm not "the most cautious driver ever" either...

I text and drive, i drink pop and drive, i eat and drive, i speed ALWAYS, and i've got more stereo at 10% volume than most people have at 100% volume
