School bus stop signs?
|
Situation:
School bus, southbound, stopped, stop signs and flashing lights active.
You, northbound, separated by a well established median (curbed, grass, etc).
Legal response? Stop? Slow down? Or does the median allow you to disregard it Additional Details Florida is the state in question.

STOP!
I know this because of the $350 ticket I paid. Median, no median, ocean, doesn't matter.
I am in Texas and know for sure that here you must stop. |

You do not have to stop. If there is any kind of a median you do not have to stop. |

It depends what state you live in...laws differ. In Ohio, if there is a median then no, you don't have to stop. Go to your local BMV website and see what they have to say. |

In Georgia, with median, no stop. Without median, stop. Case closed. |

If a divided road is separated by a wide median, a concrete or other permanent barrier then traffic does not have to stop for a school bus going in the opposite direction.
I have yet to see any US state laws that makes oncoming traffic stop for school buses on these type of roads. |

Children aren't allowed to be dropped on the opposite side of a divided street, meaning one divided by a median like you say. Therefore you don't have to stop, however I ALWAYS slow down, just incase a bus driver doesn't care and allows the child to cross anyway |

If there is a clearly defined median you just keep on driving. You should make yourself a little more aware just in case a student decides to hop the barrier though. Kids are notoriously careless (read stupid) and you just never know. |

You are required to stop or you may end up going to a traffic school. Check this site http://www.trafficinteractive.com/ for more info. It has some interesting and free online games too in the "cool links" section, which can help you sharpen your traffic laws knowledge |

In Califonia, the median means that you can legally procede. |

North Carolina says OK to proceed if driving on a 4-lane or more road with median or center-turn lane. |

It depends on the state-
- If your state is progressive you do NOT have to stop
- If you state is NOT progressive then you DO have to stop.

You should always stop doesn't matter what the DMV says. Buses are not suppose to drop children on the side of the road when the road is separated by a median. And when they do, the children are not suppose to cross the road anyway. However, most of the cops are clueless regarding details like this, they will ticket you even sometimes the law is on your side. and even if you win the appeal later on, it would cost you a lot of time and energy. It's much easier if you just stop for the sake of stopping and not get in any trouble. |

You are required, by law, to stop your vehicle a safe distance away from the bus until the sign is retracted and all lights have stopped flashing.
The purpose of the sign is to halt traffic wether a student is crossing the street or not. |

Unless the roadsigns and roadmarkings show differently, I was told that you always go into the left hand lane to go left or to go straight ahead. The right hand lane is for turning right only.
