Seat belt and helmet laws?

Seat belt and helmet laws?

In your opinion, how much control should the government (state or federal) have over whether people take safety precautions on the road such as wearing seat belts and helmets?

There shouldn't be seatbelt or helmet laws for adults. However I strongly believe there should be ones for minors.

I can understand the mandate for seatbelts because they do keep you confined when making evasive manuevers around traffic. You don't start sliding around all over the place. As far as helmets go....I say to each their own. I have ridden both with and without a helmet. I can say beyond a shadow of a doubt that a helmet does hamper your ability to see what is going on around you.

There shouldn't be seat belt or helmet laws-people should be smart enough to just use them!

The state you live in grants you the PRIVILEGE of driving, based on certain conditions, including mandatory seat belt use. The same goes for being licensed for motorcycles in many states. It is not a matter of protecting yourself with seat belts, but rather a matter of protecting others when you crash. If you aren't wearing your seat belts when you have an accident you could be thrown from the driver's seat. If you don't have control of the car it becomes an unguided 2-ton missile that will do more damage. If you can remain in the space where you can control the car, theoretically you can control its movements, shut it off and even aid the other passengers. As a professional traffic control assistant for the past 33 years I can tell you that I have never seen anyone unstrap a dead person. I have, however, seen people who were thrown more than a football field. Their bodies were shattered, and the consistency of their skulls was about like a flat basketball. I have seen people who were tossed from the passenger's side of their cars and then crushed when that same car rolled over them. Believe me, if you are killed wearing a seat belt you would never have survived without one. As for a helmet, if you wish to become a vegetable on a life-support machine, not using one is a good way to do just that if you survive a motorcycle crash at all. Your insurance will eventually run out, if you have any at all, and then you become a burden to the taxpayers over your medical bills. So yes, the government does have a right to force you to wear a helmet. Same goes for seat belts, too.

Lots. It's not, as some say, a matter of personal choice. Statistics show that seat belt use and helmets cut down on both death and injury, which gives the state the right to regulate such things. They look at it from a cost standpoint of course. But there are also lives at stake.

As a tow truck company owner, I've seen the things that happen when you don't protect yourself. Please, wear your safety belt, and helmet up when you ride.

They should have complete control over it, seat-belt and helmets save lives and if left up to the driver or rider they would not use them, seat-belts and helmets save other peoples lives as well.
