how does the vehicle know when you haven't done up your seat belt?

my truck is an old 1986 trooper, I think I may have to take apart the seat belt dealies and see if they put a chip in there. I know there is nothing in the seat, as I have redone the seats and had them out to do it, took off the covers, replace the padding and there is nothin in there..LOL..I am just so curious. thanks for the answers though, I never thought about the belt mechanism!

there is a sensor in the part you clip it into

It senses the weight of the person in the seat. That's how it can tell if you have a purse or a person in the seat. Also usually the drivers side will ask for you to put your seat belt on since there is someone always in the drivers seat so it doesn't go off until the switch in the belt lock is pushed when you lock your seat belt in.
