Seriously why do the cops never seem to ticket tailgating drivers?

Because the only bigger idiot than a tailgater is a tailgater that tailgates when there's a cop that can see him.

Seriously...because alot of cops are tailgaters themselves, both on & off duty.

It's not that easy to catch. Either they're doing it out in the middle of nowhere and there are no cops, they're doing it in traffic and it would be difficult to catch up and prove it, or there's a cop nearby going the same way, and they're not doing it.

Also, I suspect speeding fines would be higher in most cases. And stoplight/speed cameras, the timing of yellow lights, speed limits set lower than the 85th percentile, speed trap towns, highway speed traps in general all prove that jurisdictions are more interested in revenue than safety.

it's hard for the cops to bag a tailgater. i have seen on a certain section of highway not far from me that they have a sign up that says 'target enforcement area: following too closely'. i do see cops there often, but there's so many to bag and not enough cops to take em all.
i do like the c.b. idea tho. if u monitor ch 19, the truckers are calling out the speed traps. u could set up a few tailgater's to get ambushed when ur about a couple miles from where the trucks say there's a cop...free lunch for the cops hehe.

they do in texas but like anything else they have to be here but they have a task force to do that now especially in the big cities. and it does work road rage also.

it's only illegal when an accident occurs, then the can be ticketed for not stopping in a safe assured distance. I kow it's irrating but there's not much to do other than BRAKE CHECK. By the way, cops are the worst tailgaters!

Cops like to ticket for speeding. They have radar record as proof. When you are being tailgated, lightly touch you brakes so your brake lights come on without you really slowing down. Do it a few times. That will get rid of the tailgater.

What cops should do is ticket people who drive slow in the fast lane.

Drivers tailgate because they want the slow car to get out of the way. I usually let a tailgater go by and watch him get pulled over a few miles down the road for speeding. If you have CB radio, the truckers get a real kick out of that.
