Shifting from 2nd to 5th?

Shifting from 2nd gear to 5th gear is not bad at all, if anything, your rpm's will just drop fairly low and the engine will want to die. (not in a bad way). if it happeneds again dont worry at all, just simply shift it into 3rd.

When you put the car in neutral (out of gear), the stick should naturally sit in the middle of the gate between 3rd and 4th.

When shifting up from 2nd, just push the stick up so that the gear is deselected and just let it ride across to the middle on it's own, then push up again to hit 3rd. The mistake you're making is that you're pushing the stick out of 2nd and then thinking it has to go across in order to select 3rd, which is why you're hitting 5th.

Going from 2nd to 5th won't hurt the car, but you will be go way too slow for the engine to pull such a tall gear.

Take you time and look at the shifting pattern on the gear shift.

Shifting up one gear at a time is recommended........if you are a beginner, I suggest you practice shifting while the car is parked.....
Right hand on right side of shifter, pull shifter towards your right leg and forward for first,
Right hand on right side of shifter, pull shifter towards your right leg and back for second,
Tip shifter forward and it should reach a "self-centering" Neutral position, push the shifter straight forward with the heel of your hand for third,
With your fingers at the front of the shifter, pull straight back through neutral for fourth,
With your hand on the left side of the shifter, push it through neutral and to the right and forward for fifth.
Practicing this, will help you "feel" the shifting patterns before you ever drive the car........
the tendency is for new drivers to grab the top of the shifter and force it into gears, in a panic mode and end up in the wrong gear when actually driving a standard shift vehicle......this causes improper shifting
Many new drivers without realizing it are stalling at intersections due to being in third gear instead of first..............
In answer to your question.......shifting from second to fifth is possible, but your rpms would have to be very high in order not to LUG......and you would lose power............driving at very high rpms is not great for your engine........

This is not a problem - provided the effective speed ranges of the gears overlap. For example, if you change from 2nd to fifth at 10 mph then you may stall, and certainly the engine wont pull well. However, if you've accelerated away briskly, to 40 perhaps, before changing into fifth, there wont be a problem.

I make these sorts of changes all the time. It's a case of choosing the correct gear for the conditions and speed. Three to five is often okay too. Providing the speeds are okay, and your changes are smooth, you wont have any problems

No it's not bad it'll just slow your engine RPM's down. If you want to know a easy way to find 3rd gear just take your hand off the shifter and it should automatically move right in the middle and 3rd should be right above it. So all you would have to do is shift up.

its not going to hurt anything, you can always take it out of fifth and go back to third or fourth. Not sure where a few of these guys are getting first to fifth from, guess they cant read!

I read the question on what you did and it will not hurt the vehicle but you could cause an accident.

Become familiar with the gears. First gear is in the upper left. Second is underneath first gear. Third is to the left of first gear. Fourth is below third gear. Finally, fifth is up and to the right of third gear. Reverse is usually below and to the right. Practice shifting without starting the car. The clutch must be pushed in to be able shift to a different gear.

Shift the car into neutral, pushing on the clutch and moving the gear shifter to the middle. The shifter should move from side to side if it is in neutral. Start the car and shut off anything that makes noise, such as the radio.

Move forward by pushing in the clutch and moving the gear shifter to first gear. With the right foot on the accelerator, let out the clutch slowly while giving the car a little gas. Give the engine a little more gas, making sure the RPMs stay constant. If the clutch is let out without giving the engine gas, the car will stall.

Drive the car around, getting up speed in order to shift. First gear is used up to 15 miles per hour. Exceeding this will over-rev the engine. Keep your foot off of the clutch when it is not in use. This will wear out the clutch faster.

Shift the car from gear to gear as you increase speed. Shift to second gear when the car reaches 15 miles per hour. Shift to third when the car reaches 30 miles per hour, and shift to fourth gear when the car is going 45 miles per hour. Fifth gear is used for anything from 50 miles per hour and more. A good rule of thumb is to shift to the next highest gear when the RPMs reach 3000 revolutions per minute.

Stop the car by pushing in the clutch and the brake at the same time.

going fro first to fifth gear will not damage the engine , but it will do some thing to your wallet. shifting like that will cause a temporary loss in horse power.

curious..how did you end up to fifth gear from first gear..if u have drive a stick shift at least twice, you would know that 2nd gear is down to the left? by the way no long term damage..just dont ride ur clutch.
