Should I always keep my driver's side door unlocked while driving?
|
I was told that I should keep my door unlocked when driving so that in case of an accident or I become incapacitated, someone can open the door and get me out. But then that would also make it easier for somone to car jack me.

Most new cars have an automatic locking feature that engages at 10-15 MPH. Keep your doors locked. The possibility of being car jacked or assaulted is greater that the probability of someone being unable to get to you in an emergency. Most emergency professionals carry equipment that can get them into your car in seconds. In an emergency who cares about a window being broken out. This same kind of logic was used by the idiots that never wore seat belts because they did not want to be trapped in their car. Well the probability of you being injured in a relatively minor collision has converted most of the ones who are still alive. |

Wearing foil on your head is a good idea too. Keeps the aliens confused. Seriously though, in the event of an accident an unlocked door is more likely to swing open causing you to either be ejected or cause injury due to other intrusive objects or the door slamming shut on your arm and leg. Then, there's the carjacking scenario at the stoplight, which can totally ruin your day. Lock it. Don't worry about it. |

Most vehicles nowadays have it so all doors automatically lock when you put the key in. This is a good thing. Keep your door locked. I think it is safer that way then not. I was stopped at a red light once and this frickin guy out of the blue tried to open my door to ask me a question about directions or something. Scared the crap out of me. I am glad my door was locked. |

Keep the doors locked. If someone needs to get in for emergency purposes, they will get the door open or get you out in a different way. |

Hello!
In my opinion, I think the probability of getting carjacked is far greater than getting into an accident, so I would keep the doors locked.
If it's not too outrageous, I would also suggest that you keep your windows up as well, and if it's a hot day, put the air conditioner on.
I read in the news that someone simply stopped at a red light, and out of the blue, a malicious person walked up to the person's car and threatened them through the window with a huge knife!
You just never know in this world. Like they say, "It's better to be safe than sorry". It may be an inconvenience to lock all your doors and keep all the windows up, but it will definitely keep you safer.
Best Wishes. |

If it comes to point where you need to be extricated rather than being able to open the door yourself, are you going to care more about what happens to your car's body or your body? If emergency personnel need to assist you, they WILL get in locked door or not. On the other hand, if some loser wants to carjack you, he will NOT get in easily if your door is locked. Your choice.... |

Keeping the door locked is the best way to travel. Even if you are in an accident you can kick the windows out or someone can smash the window out. that's why they are made of glass and not plastic. but the same could be said with a car jacker. they can always smash the window. Lock the door. It's better that way. |

I think you have to decide what is the greater risk. I think if you got into an accident a locked door is the least of your worries- it would not be that hard for someone to get to you if they really tried. On the other hand, if you are in an area where carjackings are common- LOCK IT! Otherwise, I really would not worry too much, neither method is going to completely prevent the problom you are trying to avoid- the wisest thing to do is figure out what is your biggest risk and explore all of the ways to be wise without being paranoid to prevent or discourage the problem. |

keep it locked because if you get in an accident they will just break your window if it is not already broken. In an emergency they do not care about windows or your car for that mater the will do what it takes to get you out and save your life. Keep them locked have you seen in the news the last 10 years the amount of car jacking when someone is stopped at a stop light. you are much safer with them locked |

Keep the doors locked for safety, and anyone can break open a window and unlock your door from the inside to save you from an accident. Which, ironically, also means a carjacker can run up and break your window and unlock your door, too... |
