Should I have called the police?
|
This evening, I bought a few items at a grocery store on the way back from a hockey game. When leaving, the entire entry / exit to the store was blocked by a grandma and some guy I assume to be her grandson. I waited for 30 seconds while she made no motion to move the car. I started to move forward to bypass her, but she blew her horn like crazy, and her grandson shouted obscenities at me. It continued along the drive, where she got in the lane right next to me to blow her horn and scream obscenities. I pulled out my cell phone, showed it, and pretended to call the police. They cut across two lanes of traffic to shout abuse. Until that, I wasn't near her car at all; 15 metres or 30 yards. Why would I risk damage to my car to some freak who is violating basic traffic safety laws?
Should I have really called the police to lock up psycho grandma and her apprentice grandson, or just be glad I got out of it? Additional Details Just to be sure, she was blocking an entry and an exit with her car. Maybe she was checking to make sure the KFC there got her order right. Still, it was a very bad place to check it out, blocking two directions of traffic.

The police wouldn't bother with it if there was no physical contact.
The automobile is the most commonly used lethal weapon used in the western world and the only one that they won't do much about when used to make thrests. If she had brandished any other weapon, she might be arrested.
There are lots of crazy drivers out there. Always assume that everybody else on the road is a nutter. |

It was completely inapropriate behaviour on her part and you had every right to call the police. In the future, if you feel that you are being violated, abused or fear for your or someone elses safety then that is what the emergancy services are for. This is a case of bad road rage. Road rage can get seriously out of hand and be a hazard. Even if you HAD done something wrong, it was very dangerous for her to follow you and continue with her rage, because this endangered you both and other people.
If you know their number plate call the police, but in the future, always feel confident about calling the police, it's better to be safe than sorry. |

For whatever reason they were at best a distraction, and at worst a real danger to other road users. You should certainly have reported them to the police. |

what u talkin' bout?

I wouldn't have hesitated! There was definitely something wrong with them. They could have caused an accident. You didn't deserve to be treated like that! |

Yes you should have taken a note of her number and called the police, though I doubt if they would have done anything about it, no money in it, they're more interested in speeders. |

Well, you might want to have the local police write a report. You can do that today. Tell them what happened. They will not liekyl go after the psycho, but you need that piece of paper in case it happens again! That way, you can defend yourself, and if the police show up and say" Why were you hitting that old lady" you can show them the report of the previous incident.
Road rage. Clearly psycho. |
