Should I stop for a stopped school bus in this situation?

Should I stop for a stopped school bus in this situation?

So it's a 45mph zone with 2 lanes going in each direction with a median in the middle. If a school bus stops on the other side, do I need to stop (going the opposite direction)? It's been awhile since drivers ed and when I stop for the bus, people fly by me...

in both pa and nj you do not need to stop for a school bus if there is a median and the bus is on the opposite side.

I'm pretty sure this is true of every state, but i'm not 100 percent sure. Go to your state's dmv page and check it out, they should have an online version of the drivers manual.

You should always stop for a school bus .I believe it is in your drivers manual. As for those schmucks that fly past you it is their ticket. Better safe than sorry.

In California...

You have to stop behind a school bus with flashing red lights.
If you're on the other side of the street you have to stop in front of the bus (but on your side, of course).
If it's a divided road, with an island down the middle you do not have to stop.
If you see the driver crossing children you have to stop.

If you're not sure, err on the side of caution.

If you have a question about a particular stop, call the local PD and ask who regulates school buses. In California, the Highway Patrol does. If you have a question about a particular stop in CA, call the CHP.

If a school bus is stopped with its red lights flashing in the ONCOMING LANE and you are travelling on a 4 lane road with a median in the center of the roadway, you DON'T have to stop, but you DO have to use caution, reducing your speed a bit to ensure there are no children running across the roadway, which can and does happen.Remember, anything can happen at any time.
THINK AND DRIVE!!!

Old Man Dirt
In most states, it the high way is divided and the school buss is on the other side of the median, you are not to stop.
I do not know of any exceptions.
Many states have a drivers hand book in PDF format on their site. So go to your states site and check it out.

In my state school buses have these little red stop signs that the driver can deploy, that stick out from the side of the bus.

It's against the law to drive past that sign in either direction.

When there's a median, they usually don't deploy the sign.

But I salute you for stopping anyway!

Stop anyway.

Kids run across the street sometimes.

In North America, you don't have to stop if there is a solid median between you and the bus.

The only time that you dont stop for a school bus is if there is a concrete divider or a fence that is in the middle, you must stop with just a median..........a full stop.

Sahara
If there is a barrier than no. If there is not really a barrier then yes. If it's a true median strip then you do not have to stop.

This is true in the state of North Carolina. I'm pretty sure that it's true in Massachusetts.
