Should I swerve to avoid running over a road killed opossum?
Find answers to your legal question.

Should I swerve to avoid running over a road killed opossum?

I live in an area where opossums are very over populated and they often get run over by cars. On a single carriageway, which the average speed is 90 km/h (56 mph), there are often several of them that got road killed.

In case that I can’t swerve around it, should I use my brakes or just run over it?

The anamal is dead already loosing control of your car swerving to miss could be bad. Cleaning fur and guts off the bottom of your new car not as bad. Oil change technicians love fur and bones not really. A big Opossum could damage the under coverings.

that clearly depends on the situation - your speed, other cars,
road bends and so on.
as for myself, i try to avoid killing animals - here it is deer,
hares and pheasants - as long as i do not endanger myself or
other people.
the problem with this, however, is that one tends to react on
impulse, reason comes later and this may lead to wrong
actions.

If you are going that fast DON'T swerve. That is just too fast to go swerving around. If you were going slower then go around it if you could, which also assumes no one is in the other lane you will be going in. Anyway it wouldn't hurt the car if you hit the road kill, but DON'T hit the break unless there is no one near you.

run over it, if you swerve or brake you might cause an accident

ok well i know here in england if any animal runs on to the road it's against the law to stop or swerve. mainly cos of the acci
dents it could cause with people behind you. i'd say just carry on, chances are, if they really are over populated you'd be doing more good than harm.

If you can't swerve safely to avoid hitting it, then the first action would be to try to stop, but if you can't stop, just hit it and run over it.
