Your best bet is to leave the meter alone. In the event that there is NOT a time limit sign on the street... you CAN park for free. This however is dependent on the quality of the city's parking enforcement. |

wow, thats funny, can u imagine keeping a plastic bag in ur trunk so you can park for free, lol!!!!, Anyways no I wouldn't, if your that concerned call a city office and report it broken. It might be against the law to mess with it, and anyways what if someone saw you and acused you of breaking it. |

I would just put a "Out of Order" sign on it.But then again,

Not really. You could, but the officer is going to pull it off anyway to see if the meter is actually defective.
Furthermore, in NYC, even with a broken meter, that doesn't mean that you can park there for free all day. Most parking meter areas are not just governed by the meter but by a time limit located on the parking meter regulatory sign.
So you could get a summons @ a broken meter for "overtime parking". |
