Should I use 4 Wheel Drive in the Snow?
Find answers to your legal question.

Should I use 4 Wheel Drive in the Snow?

Where I live, it seldom snows and its usually about 1/4 inch. But we're currently experiencing a freak snow storm blizzard (yes, a blizzard) and I don't know how to drive in it. Any suggestions? I drive a Jeep Liberty.

Yes by all means FWD on snow will give you great traction and better handling but if you have never driven on snow you are in for a big learning curve. You have to drive a lot slower then driving on regular blacktop. Also you need to know if your fwd will allow you to drive on both snow and black top at the same time. In other words if you drive off the snow onto patches of hard road will your fwd automatically adjust. If not you will have to disengage the fwd when driving on hard road. Four wheel drive transmissions will lock up if they are not allowed to slip which means the wheel spins a little to release tension build up in the gears. When your off road or in the snow the fwd will allow the wheel to slip now and then and all is well. But running fwd on hard top with out letting the wheel slip will cause lock up and a busted transmission

Everyone is giving you good advice, 4wd should and can be used in any conditions that may allow a tire to slip. But people are all forgetting how important tires are. If you have summer tires or worn down tires they will not perform well in the snow. 4wd won't help you stop more quickly in snow but good tires would... the trade off is less braking ability in dry weather.

4*4
but u should be careful as it will also dig the show
if u hav abs good!
but do everything slowly!

Use the 4 wheel drive but don't get the idea that the 4 wheel drive makes you impervious to slips and slides. Do everything gently.....no rapid accelerations and no rapid stops ( although you probably have ABS ) Good luck and be careful.

I live up in Canada. I say yes to using the 4X4, in 4 high not 4 low. That is what it really is designed for. The only thing to remember is that it will not stop you any better so do not become over confident

Suggestion: Stay Home. Call in Sick. If you can not drive in snow, then don't go out. It does not matter if you have 4 wheel drive or 100 wheel drive. If you can not drive in the snow nothing will help.

Trust me, I live where it snows. If people who can not drive in snow stayed home, the roads would be a safer place.

yep, this is your chance to see how good your 4x4 suv really is.

Only use 4x4 to get un stuck Drove slow and stop slow always know where you can steer your car if you cant stop to keep from hitting someone Just be careful.

Have one myself and just got it. Lived in a heavy snow area all my life and never had a four wheel drive vehicle. Love the jeep but with a short wheel base it goes around in circles easy. In four wheel drive it's great
