Should cell phones be banned while driving?

Yes. Here are some statistics to support my answer.

* 84 percent of cell phone users stated that they believe using a cell phone while driving increases the risk of being in an accident.

* The majority of Americans believe that talking on the phone and texting are two of the the most dangerous behaviors that occur behind the wheel. Still, as many as 81% of drivers admit to making phone calls while driving.

* The number of crashes and near-crashes linked to dialing is nearly identical to the number associated with talking or listening. Dialing is more dangerous but occurs less often than talking or listening.

* Studies have found that texting while driving causes a 400 percent increase in time spent with eyes off the road.

* In 2002, the Harvard Center for Risk Analysis calculated that 2,600 people die each year as a result of using cellphones while driving. They estimated that another 330,000 are injured.

* According to the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society, drivers talking on cell phones are 18 percent slower to react to brake lights. They also take 17 percent longer to regain the speed they lost when they braked.

*A study conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Motorists found that motorists who use cell phones while driving are four times more likely to get into crashes serious enough to injure themselves.

no, maybe GPS and smoking, eating, reading a map, shaving, etc. should be banned while driving, as these are equally or more distracting

Yes you should only use them in emergencies

They are already been banned in California. They should use head phones more than holding the phone and driving dangerously with one hand

Chris A
it is banned in the uk.
If caught doing it in the uk, £60 fine and 3 points on license is ur prize.

No, the police will never be able to enforce this. Police have enough laws to enforce as it is and it's hard to see inside of cars to see what the driver is doing. Our current traffic laws should only be enforced such as making an unsafe lane change or failure to maintain a traffic lane, not using turn signals, reckless or careless driving, driving too slow for traffic conditions, blocking traffic, etc. If a driver is on the phone and can still maintain control of the car and not disrupt traffic (driving too slow), he/she shouldn't be pulled over. A cop could follow him/her to see if the driver is safe and not pull him/her over for just being on the cell phone. A driver should be in control of the car at all times. If a driver is being careless, going into other people's lanes without signaling, then a cop should pull them over for any traffic violation. And if the driver is on the cell phone, that should be noted on the ticket for a additional fine.

It used to be that a driver didn't receive a ticket for not wearing a seat belt unless they were pulled over for another traffic offense. Cell phones should be the same way, a driver should only get pulled over for traffic offenses and if they're on a cell phone, they'll get an additional ticket for that, but that shouldn't be the reason for the traffic stop.

YES, any communication device should be banned while driving. We don't NEED to talk on the phone while we're driving. Here at Ft Hood, you can receive a $75 fine if you are caught talking on a cell phone.

here in the UK if you are caught driving whilst on the phone you get a fixed penalty and i'm not sure if there's any points on your license. Driving with any unnecessary distraction is extremely dangerous.

I beleive that anyone that does anything that reduces their ability to give driving 100 % of their attention to driving should be permanently banned from driving. No exceptions. That way I could have the road to myself.

Ban cell phones while driving? No stinking way. Do I sound like I have a strong opinion?

When will the government stop? Will they ban putting on makeup in the car? Will they ban eating in the car? Will they regulate the color of your car? Oh, wait, they're considering BANNING BLACK CARS IN CALIFORNIA!!!!

Let's leave common sense to common sense. Teach people to pay 100% attention to driving. Let's not create endless laws to regulate every aspect of our lives.
