At what age do people become "elderly"?
Just in case you don't know it, studies by the AAA and US government agencies have shown that young drivers (16-20) are more likely to be involved in crashes and fatal accidents than older, more experienced drivers.
This is due to less experience and more risk-taking than older drivers. The studies have also found that when teens take safety classes they are more likely to be involved in accidents due to a false sense of security inspired by those courses.
It can be concluded that young people are DANGEROUS due to their lack of experience, their willingness to take risks, and an unsupported sense of security. They have less experience when it comes to driving conditions and appropriate speeds.
I think re-testing every 2 years would be more appropriate.
Not all seniors are senile or dangerous, just as all teens are not careless or drunk drivers! |

Yes and routine license renewal removes the people who shouldn't because they can't and plus, I am pretty sure that elder people are wise enough to notice when their lives will be in danger due to their poor sense of sight. |

if they are fit to do so then yes. Asian people shouldn't drive. |

Bad driving doesn't necessarily depend on the age of the driver. It depends on WHO the driver is. My grandmother is 57 [I think] and she can drive just fine. |

They should be tested often & there families should make sure they are healthy enough & not going down hill or they could have a bad accident. |

I think once you are past age 70 you should be tested every year. I think once you're in the 75-80 range -not at all. In my opinion, elderly people loose eyesight and their brain slows down, as well as their ability to push the gas pedal or use/remember newer road laws.
My grandma STILL doesn't use the turning lane and just turns automatically -no blinker either from the opposite side of the road! That is not safe and she won't listed to anyone about it either. My friend's mom is the same age as my grandma and she STOPS in the middle of the road all the time whenever she wants.
I often get REALLY angry and I feel elderly people cause a lot of road rage because they either a) drive too slow, and b) don't use blinkers which is the SECOND cause of fatal accidents in Texas. |

Define elderly. It is a fact that young drivers per capita have more wrecks than older drivers. When do you want your keys taken away? |

Don't think we should discriminate against the elderly drivers...as many are better than the younger drivers in obeying road laws and showing respect to other road users.
However, I do think (due to the physical aspect) that they should be tested more frequently and if they pass these vision, reflex & hand eye co-ordination tests, then by all means let em loose!
They too need to get around and live life! |

It would be unreasonable to make a blanket ruling declaring all elderly unfit to drive, so yes, they should be able to drive. However, I do think that older drivers should be required to demonstrate their fitness to drive on an annual basis once they reach 75. |

only if they're able to keep up with traffic and not hold people up if they remember to use they're turning signals and capable of make quick responses. |

I think at a certain age, it should be required to retake your driving test. Many elderly people are against that and say it discriminates towards them, but so many driving laws have changed since they've gotten their license. I think having them retake their driving test would not only help everyone else who hates driving behind an old person, but also help them as well. |

Some should; some shouldn't. We should be required by law to be re-tested after a certain age, (I'd suggest 65), and a short-term license granted for a year or two. |

I think that when people reach 50, they should have to go take the test all over again. So much changes in that much time... I think people should have to re-test. |
